Question about Garden

Open Question

Refrigerator model HSS25GDMD, Serial# ZD213077 Defrost sytem is not working, coils freezing up. - I have checked the heating element and it is functional (continuity test OK and confirmed function by connecting directly to 120V and it was heating properly). - I tested sensor and it was working, but replaced anyhow. - I replaced curcuit board/electronics panel and the system is still not functioning! Comments: I replaced board because I couldn't figure out what else it could have been if element and sensor are working. The board came with some instructions that indicated I needed to cut one of the wire leads for ENCODER serial numbers starting with ZD, so I did that. Is mine an Encodoer model? What else could the problem be and how do I do diganostic tests? Thanks, Jeff Smith homeowner/handyman

SOURCE: Fills with water, sounds like it starts to pump water then stops, then start again

you have a wash pump problem. can be 1 of 3 things. most likely something is caught in the pump impelor if not the wash pump motor may be faulty or ceized or it could be the capacitor for the wash pump motor is faulty. you can try removing the wash pump yourself and check the impelor if it spins freely then you will have a motor problem.
hope this helped

SOURCE: evaporator coil freezing, replaced main control

It is possible you have a defective fan motor in the condenser area or evaporator area. Sometimes when they become defective they will run for a while and just warm up and stop while the compressor continues to run. I learned that one on four costly returns to the home. The cost was to me not the customer. Thanks, Sea Breeze

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Peltier devices although not that efficient are known to be reliable. On your described problem, possibilities are:

  • thermoelectric (Peltier) module(s) (most likely) - the active cooling elements.  Most design have several sub-modules connected in series to form an array.  Failure of one in between will fail the entire module;
  • controller board  (likely) - or more specifically the section that regulates/control supplied power to the Peltier modules;
  • sensor (least likely) - most designs would have a sensor for the hotside forced ventilation system.   If the external ventialtion (fan) fails, then the controller board would prevent supply of voltage to the modules;
  • connectors (a possibility) - other than the Peltier effect, it is possible to have electrolysis on the terminals/connectors which would cause corrosion.  Check and clean all connectors to expose fresh metal, ensure tightness and positive contact.
An easy check is to test for the presence / absence of voltage to the module(s).  If voltage could be found, then it would be the Peltier module(s) that have failed. Absence of supply voltage would indicate the controller board to be possibly faulty.  To confirm, determine if there is power supplied to the controller board but none is in turn supplied to the Peltier modules. Absence of power going into the controller board would indicate a power supply problem.

Please exercise due caution when working with a live unit.

Good luck and thank you for asking FixYa.

My GE 19.7 TFX20JR only partially freezes in certain areas and not cold on refrigerator side. This all happened at the same time it stopped making ice. Water still dispenses.

Check for frozen, iced over evaporator coil caused by defective defrost timer and/or heating element. Ice maker will not work unless freezer temp is around 10 degrees or less.

Not freezing enough

You might have ice building up on your evaporator coil. That ice serves as an insulator and prevents the internal freezer temps from going down to design parameters. The ice buildup is caused by the defrost mechanism not working - check the timer or the defrost heating element.

The defrost circuit in you freezer has failed that is why you have to defrost the coils. The defrost circuit consists of the heater element, the defrost thermostat and the control module. The control module turns off the compressor and powers up the heating element to melt the ice on the coil, after the coil reaches 40 deg F the thermostat cuts off power to the heater. The heating element and thermostat is mounted to the coil. If you have a multimeter and know how to use one, you can check the thermostat and heater. You can check the heating element with a multimeter to see if it has electrically opened. If it has then you will need to replace it. Check also the thermostat, it should be in series with the heater. It should read close to 0 ohms if it is freezing and read infinite ohms if the temperature is above 40F. If the thermostat and heater check out, the problem might be with the control module.

Kenmore won't cool down.

I you might have a defrost problem. Frost free models have a heating element that is controlled by a timer to automatically defrost ice, defrost timer turns on defrost heating element every 12 hours to melt ice in freezer and allow good air flow.
You can test defrost element with an ohm meter(located inside freezer coils-will have two wires going to a plug connection), if OK replace defrost timer (located in various places depending on make and model

Three things. First is that your defrost element is faulty, replace. Second, if the defrost element is working there is usually a thin filiament of aluminium which is attached to the element and inserted into the drainpipe, this keeps the drainpipe from freezing up by radiant heat conducted from the element. Thirdly, your main pc board defrost side is faulty and needs replacing.
