Hi, our gas viking dryer overheated and does not want to stay on when start button is turned and released. when button is held ... motor sounds fine. (so it sounds) prior to the problem... dryer did not turn off automatically and clothes were burning hot. i am assuming that it eventually burnt something out? thanks so much for your help!

Dryer will not turn on and stay on.

Hello , bad news here , when you press the start button it sends power to the motor and then a clutch sets in and closes a set of points that then sends power to your element -if the clutch does not engage the motor will not continue to run or send power to the element and that is what is happening to your dryer.
not an easy fix at all , the clutch is bad and its located inside the motor and the entire motor would need replaced to repair this problem. they range from 80-100 dollars and would take about 1-2 hours to change.
let me know if you have any other questions.

Kenmore gas dryer timer? problem

Sounds like your centrifugal switch on your drive motor may be defective. The switch is supposed to "latch" (or stay closed) when the drive motor begins to spin. That...or, you may have a defective start switch. Please post back with your COMPLETE model number so I can determine how your dryer is configured as all dryers are not alike. I need to make sure.

Maytag PYE2300AYW starts when I hold the button in, but will not stay started.

The motor will need to be replaced. There is a throw-out switch on the motor that keeps it running after you release the start button. These are generally easy to change, with the only hard part being taking the cover off and putting it back on. http://www.partstore.com/GetModel.aspx?MfgName=Maytag&BrandName=Maytag&ModelNumber=PYE2300ayw&PartCategoryName=&Keywords=motor Any of these motors listed will fit your unit.
