Question about Sony MHC-GX470 Shelf System

1 Answer

No input jacks for sattelite radio

I RECENTLY PURCHASED A XM SKYFI3 FOR MY CAR AS WELL AS FOR MY HOME STEREO.  THE DEVICE WORKS IN ITS CAR  DOCK AS IT SHOULD.  HOWEVER, IN READING THE DIRECTIONS FOR THE HOME DOC DEVICE IT STATES THAT THE FM MODULATOR (THE PART THAT TRANSMITS THE SIGNAL TO  THE STEREO) WILL WORK IN THE DOCK BUT ONLY WHEN IT IS DIRECTLY CONNECTED TO THE STEREO VIA ITS INPUT JACKS FOUND IN THE BACK OF MOST STEREOS.  TO MY DISMAY I FOUND THAT MY STEREO, THE MHC-GX70, DOES NOT HAVE THESE INPUT JACKS ON THEM.  IS THERE ANYTHING I COULD DO OR AN ADAPTOR THAT I COULD BUY AND USE TO RECTIFY THE PROBLEM ?  A CO-WORKER OF MINE TELLS ME THAT ALL I HAVE TO DO IS BUY NEW SPEAKERS?   IS THERE A SOLUTION TO THIS PROBEM?

You need a system that has input jacks. This is not something that can be added without some major re-designing, as like in adding the feature. It is more complicated than it looks!

Stereo has only one aux input

Technically it could, but it would only play through one channel. You're probably better off just getting a 3.5mm Aux to RCA cable. They are very common and easy to find at any electronic store.

You must have a subscription and listen 'live' 8 hours a month, or it doesn't let you listen to recorded content anymore (thanks to the RIAA and their royalty fees to XM)

8GB card is a SDHC card, and these units were designed to read SD cards. At a glance, you would think it shouldn't make a difference, but data is stored differently on SDHC because of expanded capacity than SD cards. I, too, learned the hard way; purchased storage card before researching "processing" capabilities of the Skyfi3 units.
Your card should work fine in a Cell phone or other devices specifically designed for SDHC cards. Hope you get some use out of it.

The Skyfi3 receiver will "self-mute". Is the mute frequency the same as other phone devices or TV remote controllers? I have the Skyfi3 in the kitchen, could an appliance cause this?

Yes, if you mean XM reception. Your microwave oven is actually a radio transmitter near the Satellite Radio frequencies and when you use your microwave, it WILL wipe-out XM radios. Even my neighbor can do it to mine! Check it out - boil some water and watch your signal fade in and out! You're going to want to move the radio, or use a 'repeater' for it, or use the playback of prerecorded.

XM SkiFi3

Interesting.  There is a thing called impedance matching.  If the speakers input Imped. doesn't match the SkyFi's Output imped. you can overload it.  Sort of the electrical analogy to drinking from a firehose.  Try charging it and using it on a regular line level input for, like, a stereo.

Roady xt and car kit under warranty but part is obsolete

Wow, sounds like a tough break, Personally I would take the XM offer, or perhaps look at Ebay for a new dock. YOu can go throught the warranty process with delphi they usually are simple enough to deal with, but that will be a long process. Wiring it into the radio is still going to require a working dock, and most stock car radios dont have an input. Some will say AUX input or XM ready on them. Now if your car has a tape deck you might try one of those handy tape adaptors that plugs from your dock to your tape deck. You can pick those up at your local electronics store for 10-20 dollars, and they work pretty well. Hope that helps Let me know there is anything else I can do
