Question about Brother MFC 420CN All-In-One InkJet Printer

1 Answer

My Brother MFC 420CN printer indicated it was out of Magenta...so I replaced the cartridge. After replacing it asks "Did you replace Magenta?" I said "yes". Now it indicates "No Cartridge. Open scanner cover, then reinstall ink cartridge" I actually went as far as replacing ALL the color ink cartridges that weren't even empty, and it still gives me this message. Why is it not recognizing the new cartridge? What can I do to reset this? Why does my printer use so much color ink when I rarely ever print in color?

Yep, it supposed to **** your money out of you pocked until you come up with a right solution.

Try pulling your power cord when your unit is on and when it off. It might help.

Try a factory reset on your printer. It's called hard, cold, factory, deep reset that means same thing.

Resetting Brother Printer
You need to keep pressing the DOWN or UP keys a couple of times till you see 'Maintenance 99' displayed on the display. Then hold down the 'Set' button to go to standby mode. Please note that if you press the exit key only after typing in a single digit then the machine goes to maintenance mode in initial stages.

Black ink on my Brother MFC-420CN is faint and streaky

You said you replaced the cartridges. Were they Genuine Brothers' Cartridges?

My Brother MFC-240C, does not like Generic Printer Cartridges. That sounds like your problem. Also I had with Brother's was problem with Color. Color that should be Yellow, will turn out Green, or Blue Green, etc. The Generic Cartridges, also printed lines thru the words. That's what the Companies do., so they can keep selling the ink cartridges.

Some Printers, are able to use Generic, but you have to fill them up yourself and I heard, quite MESSY, or Take them to have them filled.

So I learned, thru trial and error, that you must use the ORIGINAL Genuine Cartridges for the PRINTERS.

This is the only advice I can give you. If you find this helpful, pls rate me.

Thanks and Good Luck :0)

Red Menace

Try unplugging the printer for about ten to fifteen seconds; then replug.

This may clear the printer's memory about the low magenta. I had a similar thing with yellow, and when I replugged it stopped complaining about the yellow and told me that my cyan was out, and magenta low. I replaced the cyan, and voila! I can print!

Try cleaning the contact pads in the print carriage behind the cartridge with the eraser on a pencil. Also clean the ones on the cartridge for good measure.

Changing ink cartridges

Do you use generic ink carts?
Those do make a lot of trouble with different errors.
Use another cart and it should disappear.

The technique of brother printheads demands some ink to keep the printhead working. Otherwise it will dry out. Therefore the machine runs some auto cleaning cycles (about once a week).

You should set date and time and leave the printer on power (You can turn it off by pressing stand-by-fax. But do not unplug/disconnect it from power outlet. Otherwise the printers logic thinks that if the printer is reconnected that it is newly initialized and pumps a lot of ink into the waistinktank).
The amount of ink when running auto cleaning cycles is about 1/10 of the amount of the initializing one!

First, wouldn't print black, now won't print magenta- all new cartridges!

Unplug machinepowercord. Open printer and take all carts out. Plug in power. Machine demands carts. Put new one in: Replace with original ink carts!. When asked push 1 (yes New cart). If you have used thirdparty carts, there could be a prob due to construticon or ink quality. In case there is no bk after 3x cleaning cycles anymore, the head is clogged: This happens because the filter in front of the nozzels is clogged by pigmented ink. DO USE ONLY DYE INK for all types of brother inkjet machines!!!

Mfc brother printer

Something that has worked for some Brother owners to get cartridges recognised.

1. With your MFC powered up, open it up and remove the cartridge you are having a problem with, then close the MFC, leaving it powered up. It should report that there is no cartridge in the machine.

Still with the MFC powered up, open it up and reinsert the ink cartridge, then close the MFC. It should either ask if you have replaced a cartridge or go into its cleaning mode.

Answer "yes" to "have you replaced cartridge?" and it should either "print" or "clean" and then "print".
