My dvd status is showing this message: "This device cannot start. (Code 10)". I`ve tried re-install its driver but the problem wasn't solved. There's something else I can do other than replace my device?

MY PROBLEM IS NOT ABOUT BARCODE SCANNER. My built-in CD-ROM/DVD status is showing this message: "This device cannot start. (Code 10)". I`ve tried re-install its driver but the problem wasn't solved. There's something else I can do other than replace my device?

It is usually the signg of a rom drive going bad.

First double check ALL connections to and from the device.
Then take a look here

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310123

Whilst the mention drivers the facy that windows does not normally need specific drivers for this type of device usually leads to an actual hardware fault.

You could also try this as on occasion it too can help
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929461

Other than that I would be looking at replacement.

Hi,
The easiest way to solve a USB error code 10 in Windows XP is to follow the steps below to remove and reinstall all USB controllers.
A. Click on Start B. Right Click on My Computer, click on Properties C. Click on the Hardware tab D. Click the Device Manager button. E. Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers section. F. Right-click every device under the Universal Serial Bus controllers node, and then click Uninstall to remove them one at a time. G. Restart the computer, and allow the computer to reinstall the USB controllers. H. Plug in the removable USB storage device, and then test to make sure that the issue is resolved.
Good Luck!

Read the following web blog- it talks about this problem, and possible fixes for it:
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itprohardware/thread/52523623-9d3e-4490-847d-79fa72cfbbc4
Sometimes, for reasons stranger than fiction, drivers can become corrupt or faulty. As the blog states, sometimes you can merely reinstall them, and get them working again.
Good luck, thanks for using FixYa, and good luck to you.

Typically related to a bad driver. You can try right clicking the device and select "Update Device Driver", search automatically. If it doesn't find one you may need to delete the driver completely and re-install it. It shout be at C:\Windows\system32\DRIVERS\cdrom.sys

The Code 10 error is one of several Device Manager error codes. The Code 10 error will almost always display in the following way:
"This device cannot start. (Code 10)"
Details on Device Manager error codes like Code 10 are available in the Device Status area in the device's properties: How To View a Device's Status in Device Manager.
Important: Device Manager error codes are exclusive to Device Manager. If you see the Code 10 error elsewhere in Windows, chances are it's a system error code which you should not troubleshoot as a Device Manager issue.
Cause of the Code 10 Error
A Code 10 error is generated when Device Manager can't start the hardware device, a situation usually caused by outdated or corrupted drivers.
A device may also receive a Code 10 error if a driver generates an error that Device Manager doesn't understand. In other words, a Code 10 error can sometimes be a very generic message indicating some kind of unspecified driver or hardware problem.
Error Code 10 Troubleshooting
1.Restart your computer if you haven't done so already.
There is always the chance that the error Code 10 you're seeing on a device was caused by some temporary problem in Device Manager or with the hardware. If so, a reboot might fix the Code 10 error.

2.Did you install a device or make a change in Device Manager just before the Code 10 error appeared? If so, it's very possible that the change you made caused the Code 10 error.
Undo the change if you can, restart your PC, and then check again for the Code 10 error.
Depending on the changes you made, some solutions might include:
•Remove or reconfigure the newly installed device.
•Roll back the driver to a version prior to your update.
•Use System Restore to undo recent Device Manager related changes.
3.Reinstall the drivers for the device. Uninstalling and then reinstalling the drivers for the device is a likely solution to a Code 10 error.
Important: If a USB device is generating the Code 10 error, uninstall every device under the Universal Serial Bus controllers hardware category in Device Manager as part of the driver reinstall. This includes any USB Mass Storage Device, USB Host Controller, and USB Root Hub.

You have corrupt IDE drivers. You may need to re-install your motherboard chipset drivers. If that still does not resolve the issue then you may have to re-install Windows from scratch.

Dear Sir/Madam, I have a Dell notebook with an Optiarc RW AD-5540A DVD player. Now I have "error code 10" = "the device cannot start". How can this be fixed? I am not computer literate, really. thanks....

An error code 10 error occurs when Device Manager can’t start a hardware device. This error is usually caused by corrupted or outdated drivers, so most often the solution is very easy.
  • The first solution to to restart your machine. Some error messages can be caused by a temporary problem.
  • Next, did you just install a new device or Windows update? If you did, this might have caused the problem. Either roll back the driver you installed, or use the System Restore to undo recent Device Manager changes.
  • The most common fix for a Code 10 error is to uninstall and reinstall your device drivers. If it is a USB device device is generating the Code 10 error, uninstall every device under the Universal Serial Bus controllers hardware category in Device Manager as part of the driver reinstall.
  • You might also try to update the drivers for your device, if a more current version is available.
  • You can run an update for the Windows Service Pack. There might be a patch available which will solve your error.
  • If none of the above solved your problem, you should take out your DVD drive and test it in another laptop, if possible, or connect it to a desktop computer using a converter.
  • If all of the above solutions don’t fix it, you might need to replace your DVD drive.
To update the DVD drivers, you have to search your computer manufacturer's website for the drivers. However, here's an easy way:
Use this driver scanning tool, which scans your computer for the needed drivers. It has an option to automatically retrieve them for you.

You can download this free tool from here, or directly from this link.

After you have downloaded the above file, double-click on it and follow the simple steps to install it. Then, when it asks if you want to run it, just answer yes. This is easier than manually searching, downloading and installing the drivers.
Hope that helps.
Regards,
Raspal

From your description I understand that the DVD drive is not working and you have code 10 error in device manager.
Do not worry, run the following fix on the pc and then restart the notebook.

Cd rom not working. In the system devices it is listed with a yellow mark on it when I check the status it says "this device cannot start. (code 10)

Delete it from system devices, then reboot so it will be rediscovered. If that doesn't work, turn it off and physically detach and re-attach it. If that doesn't work, replace it.
