Your system take just about everything. I think and I think most here would cocur that SATA is the way to go. Your system can do it. When you do get it installed and running, try to get at least 40% of the files, pictures, etc. off the drive with your operating system and then do a defrag. Your system will be much quicker. If this answers your question PLEASE rate this as fixed. If you need more help just add a comment and I'll be happy to assist you further. Thanks kid_cat_dog.

I understand you have a Dimension 8300 PC. It depends on what your motherboard supports AND what type of connection your hard drive, that you bought (if you did), has. Apparently your motherboard supports both IDE and Sata.

Have you already took a look at this?

http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim8300/sm/drives.htm#1103012

If your motherboard seems supports Sata, go with that, its faster.

FYI, EIDE and Ultra ATA are basically the same thing, with EIDE being in the lower spectrum of data transfer rates. There's really only two: IDE or Sata.

Cheers,

According to http://reviews.zdnet.co.uk/hardware/desktops/0,1000000973,10004197,00.htm this tower has Serial ATA, or SATA. Just to confirm, you can easily pop open the case and take a look at the hard-drives. If you see a wide thin ribbon-like cable connecting to your hard-drive then you need an Ultra ATA (or just ATA or IDE) drive. It looks like this:

If a thinner red cable connects to your drive, then that is SATA. It looks like this:

What is a ultra ata/100 hard drive is it the same as pata drive?

Ultra 100 is a type of cable designed to support 100mb/s vs 66mb/s. It has 80 pins vs. the 40 pins used on Ultra 66. Pata is short for Parallel ATA, which is the same interface as the Ultra 100 cable.

I need to go to a much larger & faster hard drive

Sony recommends to use the preinstalled Hard Drive as the Recovery Discs works with the specific Hard Drive. However, you can add additional Hard Drive to the Computer.
Please check the link below for more information.

Your computer is shipped with 80GB Ultra ATA/100 Hard Drive. you can use Hard Drive of size 80 to 500 GB for best functionality.

Can I install a hard drive in an HP Pavilion 6736 which has a capacity greater than 20GB ? If so, is there an upper limit to the capacity..can I install a 120 GB drive?

The size is not an issue with the hardware normally. Usually it has to do with the operating system. If you are running an OS like windows xp you should have no problem.

Just make sure you are using the SAME type interface hard drive. Example PATA Parallel ATA, or Serial ATA (SATA).

More Hard Drive Space needed

well kristy, in installing the new HDD for your PC, just find a free SATA cable (that usually comes with the HDD when you buy one) the a free power pin, shut the computer down, plug both in, screw the HDD in place, then reboot the computer. Format the HDD under disk management (to do this check the link below)

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/309000

for the RAM, i personally recommend getting the exact same RAM that you have right now, that is because of stability and compatibility. some issues may occur when you use generic plus branded.
