Question about Computers & Internet
Hi, Juliemanteca. Yes, your screen is broken, maybe some other parts too. If you are still under warranty or purchased it with a credit card you may have an additional warranty extention (Credit Card extended warraties cover accidents so may your house insurance policy) To pursue this makes sense as the laptop screen is the most expensive part of any laptop.
You will need to take this into a HP certified repair shop or most likely send it back to HP. HP will want to exchange it for a refurbished one but before you accept that as an option be certain to insist they "Clone" your hard drive over to the refurbished replacement if at all possibble (I'll explain a little later) and get that in writing from them in an email. Cloning replicates your hard drive exactly as it was. The Gforce needed to break your screen could easily damage your hard drive too if your laptop was running when your dog damaged it, and thus they (HP) probably offering you a refurbished replacement. If you don't already have one ask for a new recovery disc should the refurbished laptop be a newer model than your current laptop.
Should your warranty rights have expired even with the credit card doubling the warranty period please consult your insurance agent. You probably have a deductible but the cost of a new screen or even a laptop will cost more than your deductible.
If you find my solution fixes your dilemma PLEASE rate this solution as Fixed.

Connect an external monitor to the VGA port, look to see if there is a key to toggle between internal lcd and external monitor, on my lap top it is <FN><F5>, on my Dell it is <FN><F8>
if the display is normal then the problem could be the ribbon cable connector, the inverter, or the LCD. If the external display is bad also the the problem is the video card or if embedded, the mother board is bad.
