SOURCE: ice maker water taste like chlorine but tap tastes fine

Put a in-line water filter on the water line if you want. The taste is from the food and items you have in the refrigerator. Clean it out and keep your items in proper storage. Ice collects the smells in the line and the fridge. Change your ice that is sitting in the bin, wask out the bin with water and baking soda. Hope this helps.

SOURCE: Drinking water has a bad taste and smell.

You will have to trace where the foul smell comes from by tracing the water line and testing the source. Check if it is before or after the filter you get the smell, if it is before the filter, you need to check if it is on the line which comes from the source or it is from the source. Most likely cleaning or probably a replacement of the part if cleaning does not help.

Check the condition of the teflon on the ice maker.  You will probably need to replace the ice maker if the teflon is cracking and getting into your ice.

Run about 3 cycles of vinegar; then rinse with water. Run regular water through and then the ice should lose the chemical smell and taste.

Search for "how to remove ammonia from tap water" and also for "ammonia added to drinking water". You''l find information, about Chlorine, Chloramines, and Ammonia as different ways to treat water. There is suggestion for ammonia which was to let some water sit for a while to try to off-gas the ammonia. I'd use a glass pan to avoid any metal contamination/confusion for the before/after smell tests. There are kits to test the water.

But first line some facts up
1. Get a water report from the water company to see what naturally occurring minerals are in the source of water and how much of that is removed and what is used to remove it, and, how it compares with local and national standards.
2. Use the water kits, if need be, to confirm these reports.
3. Look at the water filter labels or go to the product's website. There are different levels of purification some these water filters provide. Prices go up correspondingly. I would be surprised if a filter "added" taste. Removing some contaminates might reveal other masked tastes. These filters also recommend the number of hours to be used; the ones with higher removal capability have shorter hours. I'd expect 1-2 years of use.
4. Other solutions:
- use the bypass cap that came with your frig in place of a filter for a before and after taste test.
- use a Brita pitcher.
- look into using a whole house cartridge based system (not water softeners) to get good smelling water everywhere. Replace cartridge(s) annually. Note: I would bypass the outside water bibs for lawn and pool; why use pure water to water the lawn?

Hope this helps.
Ultimately your water source is the problem source.

There is a bad order coming from ice and water dispenser. I changed the filter but it didn't help. Smells like ''dirt''. Thanks, Linda

Replace water supply line with the plastic tubing ice maker line. It fixed mine that had a metal braided line on it that made the water taste kie rubber and dirt,, after that I tried a vinyl braided line.and it made the water taste like garden hose water.. The plastic tubing was the cure. Reply and tell me what you have.

Do not use a steel or plastic braided supply line. They make the ice taste bad.

Ice from ice maker does not taste right

Hi

Ice storage bin needs to be emptied and washed. Unsealed packages in the refrigerator and/or freezer compartments may be transmitting odors/tastes to the ice cubes.
Interior of the refrigerator may need cleaning.
Water chemicals. Installing an in-line filter can help with many odor/taste complaints.
An open box of baking soda in the refrigerator section can help with preventing the transmitting of food odors.
This is a common in-line water filter, they are fairly easy to install and usually come with instructions.

Even when your well or municipal water supply provides healthy, potable water to your ice maker, some impurities may remain. These can affect the smell or taste of the ice cubes, and therefore the beverages in which you serve them. A taste and odor water filter on the incoming water-supply line--such as our charcoal "Universal Replacement Water Filter"--can help a lot.

Also, over time, the ice cube bin can absorb difficult-to-remove odors from the freezer. Some manufactures recommend that you replace the bin every 2 to 3 years, whenever it seems to be retaining objectionable odors and transferring them to the ice cubes.

A Fixya Rating would be appreciated.

Thanks
Rylee
