It could be that the Windows security has not identified that you have installed AVG 8. Have you rebooted the computer to see if that helps? Generally, it does. I know that Windows security identifies AVG 8 because that is the antivirus product that I use and I have no problem.

How to prevent you system from virus?

1. Setup Windows for automatic updating. 2. Get a security suite that has occasional updating (i.e. MS Security Essential, MS firewall, MS Defender, Adblock, etc). 3. Get broadband internet connection so that you will have a better internet experience while it's updating in the background. 4. Use a more secured internet browser (such as Google Chrome with many security extensions like WOT and SiteAdvisor). 5. Don't download ****, know where you going, and what you're doing.

Wow. I don't know where to begin...

128 Mb of ram is not enough to run any modern operating system. Which one are you running anyway? You should have 256Mb as an ABSOLUTE MINIMUM, preferably 512Mb or more.

You should only have 1 ANTIVIRUS program on your computer. Even if you uninstall an old one it will leave stuff in your registry that will almost certainly mess with the new one.

Unless you are in love with the system as is, I recommend saving all your important documents on a flash drive, add some RAM to your system and then do a fresh install of your operating system.

After the fresh install and your initial updates (microsoft I assume), download the following programs (all available free from CNET.COM)

AVG FREE 2011 antivirus (not the trial version)
CCLEANER registry cleaner
MALWAREBYTES' antimalware
ZONE ALARM FREE firewall

Anyway, good luck and please post back with your progress if you need more help.

First make sure your AVG is up-to-date...then to get rid of the popup click on the red sheild that opens the security center. Click on "Recommendations" and then check the checkbox that says, "I have antivirus software I will monitor on my own". that should get rid of the red shield on your taskbar. If updating your AVG does not work, try using Avast Free Antivirus...It's free and works alot better than AVG. Hope this helps.

AVG free edition should do the trick, but the safest way to get rid of a virus is reformatting your hard drive.

Norton keeps blocking my router because it thinks a particular website is introducing a "Portscan" worm. It then blocks all access to any website for 30 minutes! Patrick

If you are running XP service pack 2 or higher you have the Windows firewall installed.
Windows firewall will always conflict with a third party firewall and despite the fact Norton informs you the Windows firewall is disabled it's not.
Norton is a serious resource hog, consider removing Norton and going with one of the free antivirus apps like AVG 8.0 or Avast.
Enabling the Windows firewall and using a router will protect you, all modern routers have a built in hardware firewall.
