Upgraded 98 to me

I have a Dell Inspirion, I tried to upgrade from my 98 to ME and yes should not have done it. so now when i go to boot up it will not boot up fully all i get is my desktop background and mouse no buttons icons anything so can not do a single thing. i have rebooted several times with no change still not able to get anywhere. I hate to lose all my files and pictures any idea on how to fix easily?? Thanks

I would highly recommend using Windows 2000 than Windows ME. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to load the Task Manager and see if "explorer.exe" is listed. If so, select it and press the End Task button. Then click File->New Task and type "explorer.exe" into the new window without the quotes. Press OK and see if it will load.

Ok, it is far-reaching to attempt to repair your computer via this text box, but your files are NOT LOST. Simply purchase an external hard drive caddie, mount the hard drive inside it, and plug it into the USB port of another computer.

Now you simply drag n drop your precious data onto another computer.

Then you can go back and re-try your Me installation again, without any fear of losing your files.
