Question about RCA 20F512T 20" TV

1 Answer

Power surge knocked out both TV (same Model) also lost cable modem. Removed cover don't smell burned. No sign of surge on board or wires. I have repaired computers for 20 years but never until now tried to trouble shoot a TV. Any help would be helpful.

From the symptoms you describe, it seems the high voltage flyback autotransformer has failed along with the horizontal amplifier (they are slaved to each other).

Well, the only way to solve this is to get a technician take a look at the set, I'm afraid. Repairs could cost upto $100 or more, depending upon the number of components that need to be replaced,

Hope that helps...Thank you for using FIXYA!

Not able to find a manual yet. However, if its not the flyback, then you may want to consider replacing the power board..

My cable connector is broken off the back. its a 1343 model. I would like to use cables to connect it to a DVR.

If you are electrically inclined, you can replace the cable jack on the TV ... but it will require some doing. You will have to open up the TV and find the circuit board with teh coax jack on it. take a soldering iron and remove the coaxial jack from the circuit board. Make sure you don't overheat the circuit board while you are doing this, or you will burn out the whole board. Once the jack has been removed, take it to Radio Shack, or a similar store, and find the exact same part. Then reverse the process -- attach the jack without overheating the circuit board, and put the TV back together. ****If you are not VERY good with electronics, don't try this unless you are not afraid of losing the TV -- it is VERY easy to burn out a circuit board.
If there is a TV repair person in your area, it would be a good bet that they can fix it for you at a reasonable price -- just be sure to tell them that all you need is to have the coaxial jack replaced. This way they can only do what you are asking for, and can't charge you for repairs you did not need.

Sony trinitron color tv ,model no.kv-G14Q2,70W,SER NO. 2266941.was struck by lightenning and now can not power or ever do any other operation. what can i do to bring it back to normal.

If your set was struck by lightening then God Help! you must be lucky.
A first hand look into the set is important to see the extend of the damage and if you see burned boards then it will be bettter to go for a full replacementt of the board.Check cost and decide.
However if you are lucky you can have basic faults in the power section, fuse, surge protector, rectifier, capacitor or the Sm driver.
If fault in the tuner side and there is damage there is no hope.

Fuse

A schematic can be obtained on the internet or localy through a dealer channel.

As for your first question.

A glass fuse is a device which allows only a certan amount of power to flow through it.
it's a glass tube about 1 inch long and with a little wire of aluminum running through it and a aluminum metal cap on each end with the voltage and amps written on at least one end.

A fuse of this type sits in a tray that has two metal ends to hold the fuse in place.

Some of them are coated and light tan in color ( could be to prevent shattering )

Once the power level is exceeded the fuse gets too hot and burns up the filiment causing
an open circuit and stopping power flow.

A fuse of this type can be removed from it's try by using insulated gloves or
an insulated fuse removal tool to prevent shock and be replaced by an identical fuse
with the exact same voltate and current rating.

Once the fuse is removed from it's tray it can be tested with an Ohms meter
to determine if the fuse is actually open.

a glass type fuse in a television set will be located near the power chord
connection to the chasis ( main board )

A blown fuse is a sign that a power surge occured

1. If the power surge occured from getting too much power from the power cable side that plugs into
the wall thats good because chances are it just blew a fuse because of it.

2. If the power surge was the result of failure of a component deeper into the circuitboard replacing the fuse will not do any good and may blow again as soon as you turn on the power.

Shalom..
