My SPD-S keeps telling me my flash card is unsupported. Im using a SanDisk 512mb and 1.0gb compact flash. Is this an improper card, or is there something wrong with my sampler??

I have 512 MB flash card and when inserted it shows unsupported. So, I checked in my computer and its working fine. So, I formatted in my computer (FAT) and then copied the data again in the card and tried again. But still it gives error - Unspported..

Pl. suggest what to do ??

I figured out the problem guys. The SPD-S is only compatible with certain brands and memory sizes of compact flash cards. I found a chart on Roland's website on which cards are compatible and which aren't.

This solved my problem. I hope it solves all of yours.

I reformatted the cat with my computer. Set the allocation to 512, and format the card as exFAT. Hope this helps

The card I have always been using is now also suddenly giving this message. I found an old SanDisk 16MB and a 1GB SanDisk that works perfectly in my Boss 864 and they also give the same message. Trying to go into formatting brings the message "no card!"

For the "Unsupported" error message:

  • The SPD-S is only compatible with "TYPE 1" Compact Flash cards. Also, the maximum allowed size of the CF card is 512 mb. I tried 10 different CF card and they all worked fine although only 2 of them were actually listed as compatible cards but they were all Type 1 CF cards with 512 mb or less.
  • There is no way to avoid the type 1 restriction but you can cheat the SPD-S concerning the 512mb restriction. If you have a CF card with 1 gb or more and you don't mind to use only 512mb from it... you can use a disk partinionner tool (such as Partition Magic) to delete the current partition and create a new one of only 512mb (actually make 510 mb as the partition info takes some space).

For the "unformatted" error message:
  • Simply format your card as stated in page 67 of your manual.

How to recover files from a crashed Compact Flash on my Roland SPD-S?

It's possible your CF card is full.
1. Connect the card to your computer as you have done. 2. Copy the files off it and save same them to a folder on your desktop.3. Right click only the Flash drive and navigate to "Properties" or "Get Info" if your a mac user.4. Take not of the file system it is currently using.5. Re-format the card with the same file system using your computer.6. Replace the card into your Roland SPD-S and Re-format using these steps: a. Select patch mode or wave mode. b. Press {SHIFT} and {SETUP} (CARD UTIL) c. Press the PAGE buttons to select "CARD FORMAT" then press {ENTER} d. A"[>] to format." indication appears. Press [>] e. A "format, sure?" indication is displayed. Press {ENTER} to start formatting.
7. Once formatted you can replace the card in your computers card reader and copy the files you backed up earlier onto it.8. Re-place the CF card in your Roland and it should work. If not then you may have a irreparable CF Card.

Compact Flash adapters

Hallo,

try the following program:

gogle for: GParted Live Disk

With this tool, you should be able to make TWO PARTITIONS on your 1GB CF-card (cheaper then 512MB) and create a partition with 510Mb (caution! NOT 512Mb!!).

Now you should be able to use the CF-card in your SPD-S.

Further advantage, you can store backups on the second partition, by copying them (on your PC) to the second partition.

Best regards,

File import

Try IMPORT instead of just trying to load them on your SPD-S.
The SPD-S uses some kind of its own file-format.

Compact Flash Problems

Dynamite,
have you tried to reformat the CF card?  If you deleted the image through your computer and not with the camera, the computer may have removed more than what was needed...

CF Excessive Power

Nikons and Fujis keep the CF slot powered, and "poll" it every now and then to see if a card has been removed or inserted. So yes, a camera may drain batteries much faster with a CF card than it does with an XD. But if it really does do this, then someone at Fuji deserves to be on the street, looking for a new job. Polling a card every few seconds does not have to be a traumatic experience to the camera. A Nikon can sleep for months, and not show appreciable battery drain. After what I've seen in the horribly slow CF write times of the S3, and the large artificial difference in write times between CF and xD on that camera, I'd say someone (or several "someones") at Fuji is doing everything in their power to make CF look bad and steer people into xD.
