As you probably saw FixYa wont let me post what we were told about refunds from the CM

They edit all our stuff to make sure we cannot tell too many truths.

Hope you get sorted and this post does not get edited AGAIN

Cathy - I have only just found this post today - not sure where it has been lurking since I check the Fixya site at least once a week???? Please write again if you have not got this problem with your Des.1 touch screen fixed yet. Meantime, here is the key sequence for gaining access to the calibration screen without using the Menu buttons. Your problem may or may not be a calibration one, but this can't do any harm:
When you just can't get to the menus at all:

    Turn the machine off.

Then hold down the "Reverse" and "Pivot" buttons and power it back on.

You now have the setup screen.

Touch the "Needle Down" button and you will see the crosses.

Use the stylus or a small blunt object like the blunt end of a needle and
touch exactly the centre of the crosses and each will turn green.  Then click on
    "save".

Try uninstalling the program, and reinstalling it. Go to Control Panel, select "uninstall/resinstall", and select your program.
Then reinstall it with the floppy.
If this doesn't work, there may an incompatibility issue with windows or a windows update, you never know.
Couldn't find any information on this when I googled it, so more information might help us help you solve this.
Good luck, and will try to check back to see if you have more information.

Flash the firmware may help. Or you may be able to reset it by pressing a button for 30 seconds or something. You can take a look at the manual to see where to reset and download the firmware updator from the manufacturer's support web site and connect your Palm to your PC and do it.

EXTERNAL FLOPPY DRIVE FOR DESIGNER 1 ?? HOW TO

Sorry, an external floppy drive will not work for a Designer 1. You would have no where to plug the cable in to. The internal floppy drive is quite expensive. You might want to look around for a used Designer 1. You can probably find one for $400-$500. Replacing the floppy drive on yours would cost you almost $400 depending on the local dealer pricing.

I have a Husqvarna Viking Designer I. The touch screen no longer responds to touch. Is this a motherboard problem and is there a ballpark price that goes with the motherboard?

I would check the Touch Screen first. Your Owner's Manual tells you how to calibrate the touch screen from the SET menu. However if the touch screen isn't working, you can't get to the SET menu. Suggest taking it to an authorized Viking Dealer and they would be able to quickly determine the solution. You can find the nearest dealer by going to the Viking website - http://www.husqvarnaviking.com/us website and click on 'Locate a Dealer'.

I the floppy discs that control my Designer 1 embroidery machine

You can have replacement discs ordered from Husqvarna Viking. Visit an authorized Husqvarna Viking dealer for them to order the replacement discs. However, you might luck out and they have some already on hand from a scrapped machine or a trade-in. You can find your nearest dealer by visiting the Husqvarna Viking website - http://www.husqvarnaviking.com and clicking on dealer link down the left side of the page.

Good luck.

Designer I - failing floppy drive

You can get the floppy drive replaced. I did tons of them! I don't think it is you. Sometimes you can "wiggle" the floppy a bit with the little flap door open and get it to read. Not a huge deal to replace.

External Floppy Drive

You don't have to convert your Des1 to USB. Make sure you have the correct machine and transfer method selected in 4D Configure. I used to have trouble writing to the floppy sometimes in my old Customizing software. What worked for me was: Don't put the floppy in the drive yet; hit the "Write" button; you will get a "Disk not Found" or something like that message; put the floppy in then; and click OK or the best option you will be offered. That seemed to make the program kick-start the "look for floppy" process. I belong to another Designer 1 support group and recall this subject has been discussed some time back. If I find out more information for you, I will pass it on.

My designer 1 keeps saying "No floppy Disk Inserted" and of course there is.

Do you have this problem with only one floppy, or have you tried several? Make sure the floppy is pressed into the slot fully. It should sort of "click" in.

Is the floppy properly formatted for the Designer1? You cannot just drop embroidery files onto it and put it in the machine - the designs need to be in .shv format and in a certain file hierarchy. Only genuine Husqvarna embroidery disks, or ones created in Husqvarna or Embird software can be used.

Of course it may be a sign that your Des1's floppy drive is not working, in which case you will have to take the machine in to be fixed.

Post more detail on your problem and I will try to offer more specific advice.

Embroidery unit

Do you have a hoop already on when you first re-calibrate the embroidery arm? You need the embroidery arm ONLY when you first turn on. Don't put the hoop on until you are ready to start embroidering. If this is not the problem, try re-loading the machine operating system. If you did not save your floppy or USB file, go to Husqvarna website and download the latest one, and re-load it. (Be sure to select the correct file for your particular machine i.e. floppy or USB.)

Probel with Embroidery disc

I am pretty sure you can download Disk 100 free from the Husqvarna Viking website. This has all the embroideries that came free with the machine, plus the alphabets (I think!). You can download this direct to your PC or to a set of floppies, depending on what your Designer needs and what support software you have (or have not) got. If you have no Husqvarna software at all, your PC will not be able to read the floppy. It is in .shv format which PCs are unable to read, being an embroidery machine language only.
If you are trying to open the faulty disk in your Disk Manager software, I always found it worked better if I didn't put the disk in the floppy drive of the computer until after I had already opened Disk Manager.
Hope some of the above is useful to you.
