Question about Maytag MDG4000 Dryer

1 Answer

I have a Maytag LDG 4000 gas dryer with electronic ignition. The igniter glows, but does not ignite the gas. I can not smell any gas, so I'm assuming a valve of some sort, internal to the dryer, is not opening as it should. In addition, I checked to ensure the gas valves leading to the dryer are 'on', and the gas water heater I have is working A-OK. Any suggestions?

Igniter glows - No gas ignition. If the igniter heats
up but the main burner flame is not ignited, remove
power and using an ohmmeter, check the following:
• Open secondary coil
• Open holding coil
• Open wire harness
• Stuck flame sensor (Stuck closed)
Most likely bad gas valve coils.

My mdg308daww spins, the heat igniter, glows for about 5-10 seconds and then stops after about a minute it glows again. The igniter was tested ok, and the coils were replaced still the same problem....

Assuming the gas supply valve is turned on, I would make sure the gas valve orifice in your dryer isn't plugged up. If its not that leaves your gas valve not letting the gas in. Very rare though.

Smelled mild gas odor after moving dryer. Replaced gas line connection. Still smell gas. Tried to tighten gas line have strong gas odor after running dryer. Does not seem to be heating

The gas valve should not be opening unless the glow igniter glows and sends a signal to the gas valve. I suspect a small leak in either the gas pipe or at the gas valve. You will have to get to the gas valve to perform a leak test. While the dryer is open, replace the igniter.

Maytag gas dryer runs but does not heat

If yo smelled gas then the ignitor may not be working.
First thing to check is the ignitor underneath the drum. (You have to open the panel to see it)  It should glow shortly after the dryer starts, then the flame starts and the ignitor shuts off.  If the ignitor does not glow then the thermostat is bad.  If the ignitor is glowing but the gas does not light then the gas valve coils may have to be replaced.   If the gas ignites but does not stay on either the flame sensor or the coils are at fault.

I have an older Maytag D8512 with an electric igniter. When I push the start button, nothing happens. I checked the pilot light and it is off. I used a long matchstick to see if I could start the pilo

there is no pilot light. electric igniter will glow and pull amps allowing gas valve to open. if you do not see igniter glow it is bad or thermal fuse has blown. look for 120 volts at the igniter when running. if voltage found bad igniter, if no voltage trace back to fuse/stats.this assumes dryer is actually running. if drum not turning could be a number of things. door switch, fuse, etc

Maytag Neptune MDG 5500 AWQ heats sporatically

your dryer has a safety feature that it will not run or heat when the door is opened. It is so no gas fumes are exhauseted into your home. Once the safety is engaged, It will not allow the dryer to restart for a short while. It should clear itself after only a few minutes. Hope this helps, good luck.

My Dryer won't heat

I'm assuming you're talking about the igniter. The igniter in these dryers is a glow bar type. Over a period of use, the igniter can become weak with age and no longer produce the required current to open the gas valve. If the gas valve does not open, the result is a glowing igniter with no ignition. The following link provides some good info on glow bar igniters:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r401858-replacing_oven_igniter_gas_range

I know the link is for replacing an igniter in an oven, but the same type of igniter is used on gas dryers as well. I just wanted to give you information on the types of igniters and what current readings they should have.

Another common problem that affects ignition are the gas valve safety coils on the burner assembly going bad. There are usually two of them, and are usually sold as a set. It is recommended that you replace both of them at the same time. The symptoms I have seen more often when the coils go bad, is a dryer that will sometimes ignite and will not stay lit once it warms up. You may hear a rapid clicking or rattling noise associated with bad valves.

I hope this gives you some guidance. If you post back with a model number it would make it easier to determine how your dryer is configured, and assist in trying to locate any recommended parts.

Gas dryer

There should be a gas igniter, inside of the burner chamber, that will glow bright red before the gas will be allowed to flow. If the dryer model that you have has a flap on the front you will be able to observe this otherwise you will have to remove the front of your machine to check it. If you post back with your machine model number I will be able to assist you further.
