I would first try installing this into a desktop computer as a slave drive. Once hooked up you should be able to see if there is anything salvageable, files etc. yourself before you send it in for to an expensive data recovery service.

Hello there.

From your description it sounds like the HD is damaged, these can be very expensive to repair so hopefully you have your data backed up. What i would recommend is purchasing a new HD for the unit, something like http://www.ungo.net/HD-Kit-web.htm

This unit uses normal computer IDE hard drives, so as long as it was IDE you should be able to use any brand.

If you have data on the drive you wish to recover, you could take it to a recovery specialist who will for a fee, attempt to recover everything. This is very expensive but is an option. Click this link to see typical recovery methods: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/saving-data-a-head-crash,1044.html

Hope this helps.

Did you reconnect it while the power was on or off, perhaps try removing all power sources, connect it, and then turn it on.

Will not power up

It could be an external or internal short causing the problem. Try unplugging all speakers, inputs and outputs from the back( label the connections if necessary).
If the unit turns on and stays on, reconnect the other components one at a time, starting with HDMI, than RCAs and speakers last. Turn on the unit between each reconnect and allow to run for a few minutes to see how it reacts. This may point to a external cause.
If the unit does not turn on after the disconnect, it would point toward an internal overload, and most likely require a professional repair. If the unit has dust blocking the cooling vents, you can try blowing it out with canned air (unplug the unit before you try this). If this solves the problem, look for a better way to ventilate the unit while it is running.

Good luck,
Brian

Replace a power switch on a marantz 2238

Not hard to do, finding the switch can be a problem for some of these older units. Sometimes it is possible to clean/service the power switch.

Thanks

I have a brookstone brand record player with the ability to convert records to mp3/wma files via a sd slot and a usb slot. Every time I plug in an empty flash drive/ usb toward an external hard drive, or...

Hi,
External drives require to be formatted before use on somewhere else..
Pls "format" it on your Pc and than try again....
Sometimes proper formatting is possible on the equipment itself (like Digital Cameras )
I was not able to get into your units detailed specs to see if such feature is existed..
if its exist ,you must access thru "set up menu"
Secondly ,if the display recognizes the HD than your Record player will create its own Files/ folders..try to record something even it reads "no file" and than plug it into your PC to see what has been recorded..
Hope this helps!
Take care and please

When i power on reciever i get a message power off overload

Sounds like the audio output stage has become defective...first thing you want to do is to remove all speaker wires from the rear of the unit and then try turning on the unit again..if it works then you have either a bad speaker or the wires associated with it...if it still powers down, there is a problem in the unit itself...These units use an audio amplifier module IC that can be expensive..also, being the unit is older..the parts may be hard to find...another possibility you can try is to look under the unit where the venting holes are for the amplifier..if there is a plate here to remove..remove it and look at the commections on the amp IC...these often go bad and will result in an overload condition..all you would need to do in this case is get a soldering iron and resolder the connections on the IC..the solder joints should look shiny if they are good and will look like they have a cracked ring around the pins if they are bad..be careful not to bridge any connections though. Hi matthewgk,

It's been a while since I have used my unit and it is not plugged in presently but this may work as I recall having a similar issue a couple of years ago. Try pressing the 'input mode' button on the main unit (or on the remote) to cycle through to AUTO rather than ANALOG. If you still have issues you could try cycling through the DVD remote menu (usually on screen) and selecting the input source type while AUTO is shown on the receiver.

Kenwood Tuner 40701390 (part of M58M system) receives radio stations but LCD display not visible. It gradually faded out over a long period. Suspect fault in front circuit board

if it faded over time the display itself is bad.. considering it to be an older unit might be hard to find the part... good luck.

Press the "UTILITY" button under the Menu heading above the 10 digit key-pad. Under "System Parameter" -Param3, check that PS2 Mouse is set to "ON" and (of course) that the connector is firmly inserted into the mouse connector socket.
