I would first try installing this into a desktop computer as a slave drive. Once hooked up you should be able to see if there is anything salvageable, files etc. yourself before you send it in for to an expensive data recovery service.

Hello there.

From your description it sounds like the HD is damaged, these can be very expensive to repair so hopefully you have your data backed up. What i would recommend is purchasing a new HD for the unit, something like

This unit uses normal computer IDE hard drives, so as long as it was IDE you should be able to use any brand.

If you have data on the drive you wish to recover, you could take it to a recovery specialist who will for a fee, attempt to recover everything. This is very expensive but is an option. Click this link to see typical recovery methods:,1044.html

Hope this helps.

Did you reconnect it while the power was on or off, perhaps try removing all power sources, connect it, and then turn it on.

This hard drive has been accidentally dropped, all computers we working one could not recognize the drive, however, its lights still on and can here disk spinning inside.

The connection between the internal hard disk and the interface has failed. Last attempt to save it: dismantle the case, extract the disk and inspect the interface board. If no cracks or other damage is viewable reconnect everything back and try again. If it's the same then the unit is dead, junk it.

I dropped my unit. It does not turn on. How can I

It depends on what got damaged when you dropped the unit. Open up the enclosure. Look for any wires that came loose. Reconnect any loose wires.

If the wires are broken, none are loose or reconnecting the wires doesn't help, you can get a new enclosure (3.5 ATA (IDE)) and put the drive in that. Alternatively, get a USB/IDE/SATA multiple drive connector (where the drive stays out in the open). Connect the drive in question to the IDE side. Then connect the usb cable for either option to the computer and see if the drive is recognized. If it is recognized then you can transfer the data. If this doesn't work, the drive itself may have been damaged. The way to get the data would involve a data recovery company taking apart the drive and reading the information directly from the platters - slow and expensive.

I hope this helps.

(please note that the power for the USB/IDE/SATA dongle should be connected before attaching the drive to the computer. In some models, it should be powered up before connecting the drive to the device to avoid a power surge during power up.)

When you disconnected the hard drive by pulling the USB cable from the computer without using the remove hardware feature it will cause the computer to not recognize the drive. You should be able to power down the drive and then re-boot the computer. After the computer has restarted then reconnect and power up the drive and windows should detect it again. Some of you files on the drive might have been corrupted when this happened so I would go into my computer and run check disk to repair any errors on the drive. If you reboot the computer and the drive still does not respond then you may have caused damage to the drive. You could then try dis-assembling the case for the hard drive and installing it into the computer and see if it works. If it works in the computer then the external hard drive's power supply is defective if it does not the the drive is damaged.

Try reseating the cables on the drive and reconnect the drive to a different usb port on the pc. Also try using a different usb cable. if neither situation solves your problem, then most likely, the hard drive has gone bad.

If the system is older, you may be limited by the BIOS. Many old systems do not recognize a partition with Windows.
Have you run fdisk for the format and partition setup?
Did you check the BIOS at startup? Make sure it recognizes the drive in BIOS and sees the partition. Hit F2 on bootup.
If it sees the drive, use a boot disk and run fdisk. Check the parameters and then run the install again.

USB recognizes it, but not the OS. I get no drive

Hello, nkhamo

Now, when you say USB recognizes it, do you mean you see the drivers being installed? Because if you are the OS is recognizing something has been plugged in.

Sometimes updating the USB Drivers will be needed. Do that by visiting the maker of your computer and search for Drivers and Updates on their Web Site, look for 2.0 USB drivers class, download that package to your desktop. The driver might be in the form of a Zip FIle. In that case, unzip the files using standard WinZip program or use software provided by computer, to a folder called cab. The driver program might show preference were it wants to unzip to. If so, let it do its thing. Then afterwards find the folder (cab or other folder) run USB driver by clicking install exe file. Note that all periperials need to be unconnected from all USB ports ( the port the laser printer connects to the computer at ) before updating USB drivers. So check cables for solid reconnection after installing drivers.
Its important to recognize the os you have. You'll find that information by clicking on Start Menu > Settings > Control Panel > System.

After doing this update, reconnecting the hard drive via USB Port.

Good luck, jasahasch

My old computer does not recognize my new 250gb wd passport I get an error that my Z drive is not logged on

Are you sure your 'old' computer has USB 2.0 support and not only USB 1.1?
You can try accessing the BIOS of the computer and see if you can change the USB version there.

Once it is recognized, Windows (XP?) should recognize it and install the drivers. If you are running an older OS, you probably need to install drivers for it first. But those would come with the drive (on a CD maybe).
