Hello Rfd832, What I see from the description is that the drive is a combo drive. Combo drives are CD-RW and DVD-ROM drives means CD-RW = Compact Disk-Read Write DVD-ROM = Digital Versatile Disk - Read Only Memory so these drives can read and write CDs but can only read DVDs (Cannot write or burn DVDs) If you want to be able to burn DVDs then you need to have DVD RW drive (either DVD+RW or DVD-RW)
You said that you are able to burn DVDs on other computer so please check the label on the DVD drive.. it should be DVD-RW/DVD+RW drive
You need to download and install an application that burns (copies) data, video or audio onto DVD's. Such as Nero burning software, roxio etc. You can also use Windows Media player to burn audio onto cd's
if its the ribbon cable itll tell you when you first turn the computer on. try going to setup in bios and see if it reads it there. i had a problem like this, i tried to have a dvd drive and a cd-rw drive together. i read on the dvd drive that it can be the only drive installed so i took the other one out and it worked fine.
Vista sucks. However, delete your drive and change the IDE cable. Also, put the drive onto another IDE channel so it re-initializes your drive - winodws data bases a drive when it has more than 5 DMA errors and clocks its speed down to PIO - very slow
Hi, i use an HP pavillion dv6000 with Optiarc dvd rw ad -7561a ata (light scribe). i tried installing a softwear after which my dvd rom will not work it was complaining of driver corruption. i did uninstall and re- installed th driver from the system hard drive. but it will not install correctly. my computer can also not read drive E anymore. can some one help please.
you might have a bad driver
go into you hardware manager and delete the disk driver and than when doen search for new hardware.
You can also go onto the emachine website and chat with an emachine tech. they can acces your computer and help you too
check also the cable to you diskdriver

p3, Did you try burning the DVD and it failed? You should try upgrading the firmware on DVD drive.

Or, your just interested why Windows is calling your expensive DVD burner a measley CD Drive? Your Burner is an all-in-one.(I think) It plays(and burns) cd's and dvd's. Whatever program you use to burn has not informed Windows of its true intentions yet...Which is to burn a dvd or a cd. It doesn't know what you are burning until something tells it to.
