Question about Refrigerators

Open Question

I have a 2006 Norcold Model N611RT that won't stay working on gas. The lights blink continuously. Sometimes I can get the flame to light, but it eventually goes out. The igniter tries 15 times to light the gas, but then the lights start blinking if no ignition. It seems to be having problems getting the gas (propane tank has gas and tank valve is on - stove works fine). Battery voltage is 12.5. I have found that the refrig gas valve also gets12.5 voltage when gas is lit or trying to light. If I move the manual shutoff valve on the gas valve off and on while the igniter is trying to light the flame, I can get the flame to light. Any ideas? Brent

SOURCE: oven pilot light won't light

Part of the problem was my own ignorance about this particular Kenmore gas oven. It doesn't even have a pilot light. Instead, there is an electric heating element close to the burner which gets so hot that it ignites the gas. It seems that the heating element also doubles as a temperature sensor, so that it opens the gas valve only when the heating element is hot enough to ignite the gas. This heating element, called the "ignitor", no longer gets hot in my oven even though there is 120VAC applied to it when the oven knob is turned on. Therefore, the ignitor is defective. I ordered a new one on-line from "Appliance Parts of America" for $31.50 plus shipping, and this should fix the problem. If it does NOT, I'll add to this post.

Try taking out the orifice on the burner that is not lighting and make sure it isn't blocked.

SOURCE: i have a norcold 3163

I have the same model refrigerator in my 1999 Eurovan. Before you leave for your trip, if you haven't used the refrigerator for some time make sure it will light before you leave and run it for awhile. This will help insure it will light when you are camping. A good trick I learned is to light one of the burners on the stove for a minute before you switch the refrigerator to propane. That seems to help. Also, don't release the ignitor button on the refrigerator until 15 to 20 seconds and then do so VERY VERY SLOWLY . One other trick is set the cooling dial in a different position than the "Start" position. If that doesn't work then turn it back to the Start position. Sometimes it takes several times to get the refrigerator to light but once it is it will stay on.

Thetford gas igniter burns but ignition is not seen by control unit

Without the make & model...
the only answer possible is a "TYPICAL" SWAG: Looks like NORCOLD is most likely your manufacturer (although I've also seen U-Line).

SPARES are good to have... (now you understand).

On-Line parts abound everywhere... It is likely an "electric"
(because of your control board statement).

I'll put up sample Pix from Amazon & eBay.
http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=Norcold+Refrigerator+Thermocouple

Your THERMO-COUPLE (flame monitor)... same (type) thing that always fails on our water heaters... typically costs $6 if you are buying one in advance... up to $24 (twice that for the "Refrigerator versions" $12 to $48) in you hour of need... Unless you call a "service" (plumber) person... Then just start adding on those ZEROs.

These also can use an INTERRUPTER (same price range)...
Buy them both... As you can tell... they are good spares to keep around (I always buy a NEW thermo-couple & put it on a nail
with a "NEW water heater installation (keeps evil spirits away).

I'd recommend you post the complete make, model & year...
Defective GAS appliances can be quite deadly... even if the work is done properly... improperly the sky (is quite literally) the limit...!!

Could NOT more strongly URGE... Buy and USE a good carbon-monoxide monitor/alarm.

Truly a LIFE-SAVER.

All gas utility companies will (or used) to QUICKLY send out their representatives to inspect/light gas appliances..

Historically this was always a FREE SERVICE...
(but sadly that the extent of my knowledge... HISTORIC).

Be safe... Comment me back if you need:
(never test for leaks with a match... My grand-daddy taught me that (course hair & eyebrows grow back... MOST of the time).

Reliant 501 Natural Gas won't stay lit

Reliance water heater?
Thermocouple is good if the pilot stays lit continuously.

501 is older model. Unknown if this unit has FVIR protection and sealed combustion chamber or open air intake on front of unit.
http://waterheatertimer.org/pdf/Reliance-2006-Service-Handbook.pdf

With FVIR protection:
Get more fresh air to the unit.
Clean the flame arrestor screen.
Test and replace the thermocouple:
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-test-water-heater-thermocouple.html
Inspect and clean burner and combustion parts
Test gas pressure, bleed air out of gas line.
Replace gas control valve.
Test draft air by lighting match and see if smoke is pulled into the vent pipe at draft hood on top of tank.

HitI have a Norcold N641 that is having ignition problems. It lights but the igniter keeps clicking and times out shutting off the gas. Occasionally it will stay on but usually it does not.

Check the flame, if there is a clinker (soot) in any part of the flame the signal will not be picked up, or sensed, if there is flick it off, and you should be good to go.

The electrode that ignites the burner, also senses flame to keep burner going. Sounds like it's defective. I'd replace it, but take old one with you to match it up.

I have a bakers pride pizza oven and the bottom oven Including the pilot light) continue to go out for no apperant reason. I have changed the thermocouple 3 times and the pilot light once. Sometimes it...

Several things to check. First be sure the pilot light flame is directly striking the thermocouple. It is a pencil sized rod that is next to the pilot light. Sometimes people reduce the size of the pilot flame to save gas. You may need to increase the pilot flame. Follow the small gas line from the pilot flame back to the gas valve. There is a screw where the small pilot gas line goes into the valve. Remove the screw and then deep in the hole is a tiny screw that can only be reached by a tiny flat blade screw driver. Turn the screw counter clockwise to increase the pilot flame. The thermocouple needs to be red hot to work properly. The second item to check is to see if there are any breezes that occasionally blow through the kitchen. Sometimes the hood fan will draw air under the ovens and actually blow the pilot flame out. Same fix, increase the flame. You may also experience low gas pressure to the appliance during heavy usage. You would need a manometer gauge to check for proper gas pressure. In short, if the oven goes out during your busiest time when everything gas powered is on, the oven may be starved for gas.

Flip the lower panel over and look for a wiring diagram. On that diagram there will be a diagnostic chart. Let me know what 5 blinks represent. Then I want you to read on.

On a call for heat, the 24 volt thermostat sends a signal to the control module. The control module will indicate a call for heat with a light on the control either blinking or remain solid depending upon model. The inducer (exhaust) blower will purge all gasses from the furnace and pressurize a pressure switch. Once the pressure switch tells the module to continue, the electronic ignition will energize and send 120 volts to the igniter. The igniter will glow and you will be able to see it if viewed thru the small inspection port. Once the igniter gets hot enough, it sends a signal to the module opening up the gas valve (24 volts). Either a pilot will come on or the burner tube will ignite then spread the flame to all burners. Lastly a safety sensor will be looking for a certain temperature within a few seconds and the furnace will continue to operate and the room air blower will turn on in a minute or two.

What could go wrong? The unit will not run if there is no signal from the thermostat (bad thermostat or broken wire), the control module does not sense a signal from the thermostat (bad control), the inducer does not energize (bad motor), the pressure switch does not close (blocked vent piping, bad switch, plugged condensate hose), the igniter does not energize (bad control, bad igniter), the gas valve does not open or there is no gas (bad gas valve, broken wire, no gas), the pilot does not light (dirty pilot), the burner does not light (bad burner, plugged orifice, not enough combustion air), the flame does not spread to each burner (bad flame spreader, dirty flame spreader, more bad burners), the flame safety sensor does not detect flame (dirty or bad flame spreader, bad flame sensor, broken wire, bad control), or the room air blower does not energize (bad fan motor, bad control).
