I bought this tv for my ,son for his 3rd birthday after having it only a few days, and being totally frustrated, I finally figured out why he didnt like the tv. First of all, you have to press that stupid little button to get a chanel above 9?? what is up with that stupidness??? so anyway needless to say my son was anoyed with this to the point that I just ended up trading tvs with him....well yesterday, my baby droped my remote and broke the little bulb thing in it, no big deal right....bull ****!!!! I own 5 diffrent universal remotes, and not 1 and I mean not 1 can be programed to operate that stupid tv!!!!!! what a crock of ****!!! now I am stuck getting out of bed just to change the volume and channel, something I normally would not complain about, but I am pregnant and on doctors ordered bed rest!! tv is all I have!! I am going nuts!!!!!!!!!! and here I am waiting to talk to emerson about a replacement remote, 42 mins of waiting still have not talked to someone!!!!!!!!! what a crock!!

The only work around you have without a remote is sloppy. If you are patient, give it a go: connect the box to the TV (cable/ant input), turn on the direct TV box, using the TV button panel (here comes the sloppy) fumble your way to the auto-program menu, start auto program. When the auto-program is done, you will have just CH 3 memorized, so the CH -/+ button will only go to that channel. Worst part will be figuring out the buttons on the TV... it can be frustrating. It may take a few tries, that's why I call it sloppy. I hope this was useful, best wishes.
I just bought a used one and had trouble with the channels too. I finally figured out that if you press the +/- on the remote, it then lets you put in 2 digit number. I still can't get my vcr to work though. I have it on channel 3, but it says no signal.
I repaired a convergence problem on this model by locating IC8C01 and IC8C02, the two large convergence chips on the main pcb(center board) and solder all the leads making sure not to leave any solder bridges! The unit was over 4 years old and used often. Those chips get pretty heated and make the solder brittle and crack around the leads.
I believe your set has a loose conection that needs to be resoldered ,every time you hit it reacts and that is good, you need to use a wooden or rubber handle to tap in the main board, around the tuner and in different areas until it reacts,be attentive when it does so you can flip the board and resoldered the area that made it react, once the problem is corrected you need to resoldered any other overheated areas and there should be a few in your set, check the grounds in the tuner(where the coax goes in the inside,is a silver box),the horizontal driver transformer and output transformer.Be careful while you do this and stay away from the thick red wire going to the back of the picture tube specially when the set is on.
Let Us know how it goes or if you need more information.
