Text is coming up on screen on all free to air channels. How do I get rid of it? Thank you

Hello, Margaret -

By text on the TV screen, do you mean closed captioning text? Is the text the same wording as what is being heard? If so, that is closed captioning (for the hearing disabled.)

The button for closed captioning on your TV remote was probably pressed inadvertantly. Locate the closed captioning button on the remote, and while the TV is on, press it to see if the text disappears.

Okay, have Hitachi 1080 HD. Called several times to Customer Service but they couldnt help. Cannot get the words in English to appear on screen for hard of hearing.

Look in the tv menu for SET UP or AUDIO options.

Look for CAPTION VISION and set to CC1.

Now exit the menu screen.

Now use the INFO or DISPLAY button on the remote to activate the closed captioning.

It should say something like CC1 ON once you get it right.

That should be about it.
Note that not every single channel has closed captioning for every single show and that the words usually take a few seconds to show up on the screen when you change to a new channel.

Good luck, hope this helps. Keep us updated on your progress.

How do I get closed captioning on a Samsung TV model TXJ2754?

Your TV displays the closed captions that are broadcast with some

television shows. These captions are usually subtitles for the hearing

impaired or language translations. All VCRs record the closed caption

signal and most pre-recorded commercial video tapes provide closed

captions. Check for the closed caption symbol in your television

schedule and on the tape's packaging: .

1 Press MENU repeatedly until you see the Setup menu. Press CH
to select "Caption."

2 Press VOL+ to open the Closed Caption menu.

3 Press VOL + to turn closed captioning on.

Misspellings and odd characters can occur in captioning. Also, there may be a

captioning delay after changing channels. Neither situation is a TV malfunction.

4 Press CH to highlight "Mode." Press - VOL or VOL + to choose

"Capt." (captions) or "Text." In caption mode, captions appear and

cover a small portion of the picture. In text mode, information unrelated

to the program, such as news reports, are displayed and
often cover a large portion of the screen.

5 If you wish, use CH , CH , or VOL + to change the captioning

channel or field. Then, press DISPLAY to return to normal viewing.

Different channels and fields display different information, such as additional
languages or supplemental information

I get a black square on my screen after about 30 seconds when I tune to some channels. Does not do it on every channel. If I tune to another and then back it will be gone but soon reappears. jd

This sounds like your closed caption has been activated. There are several closed caption options that aren't used for anything, and if you select one by pressing the cc button on your remote by mistake, it will cause the problem you're having. To fix the issue, locate the cc, ccd, or closed caption button on your remote. Press it until you the option "off" appear on the screen. Once you see "off," simply stop pressing the button and the word "off" will disappear.

Misspelling on Closed Caption

Yes - perhaps yoga, or a nice massage. You have some seriously uptight members!! It is either a computer error in translating a word from speech, or a human mistyping a word.... but it's all at the broadcast end, you really have no control over it. Try looking up "closed captioning" on Wikipedia.... and relax, the world is not perfect :)

Black square picture in the middle of the regular picture

Make sure your closed-captioning is set to "off" or to "caption 1" in the setup. You have it set to one of its "text" modes right now, and what's happening is the caption decoder is blanking the screen where the text would go if there was any. You're probably noticing this on some channels but not all - it will only show up when the channel has closed-captioning being broadcast.

The v-chip locking is a separate problem. If you can provide the make and model of TV, I'll see if I can find how to reset the lock code.

Black screen but have sound

If it is not a hardware problem, it is most likely the Closed Captioning system.
If you can still see the on-screen menu, go into your TV's menus and disable Closed Captioning.
