How do I open my cool pix battery door when it appears to be stuck?

mine is a CoolPix 4500. Looking down on the battery door the

release catch operates inwards towards the camera body.

mine has 2 metal tongues that engages with loops on the body to

lock the battery compartment. could be corrosion in the latch.

mine comes to bits with 3 small phillips screws but only accessible

from the inside! A very gentle spray with WD40 might help, best plan

spray a little into the cap and then apply sparingly with a sharpened

matchstick, leave to stand for a while, the body on mine is not

plastic but aluminium/magnesium alloy which could give corrosion

problems especially with salt water? if it is metal could zap it with a bit

of heat from a soldering iron be careful and patient a very fine bit of kit

Can't open centrifuge

It the rotor cover will not release normally, look for a small white plastic button underneath the front of the unit. You will need a small flathead screwdriver or tweezers to pop it out. The plug is attached to a string that threads up to the locking mechanism, and can be used as an emergency lid release.

Need to know what type of oil to use

Immersion Oil made for microscopes today is non fluorescing. You should be able to use any immersion oil on the market.

* Tip - After using your 100x oil objective, make sure to clean the lens thoroughly, as cross contamination to the 40x objective is a common occurrence. It will save you a lot of headaches down the road.
