Question about NetGear : WG111 54 Mbps Wireless USB 2.0 Adapter, RETAIL (DSNGWG111)

NetGear : WG111v3 54 Mbps Wireless USB 2.0 Adapter keeps cutting me off the web. my laptop never loses its wifi connection or anything else in the house. I changed the channel from 6 to 13 and turned off the powersaver in the device manager. Still same problem. please help

you need to change the wireless channel on the router from what it is set to to a number between 1 and 11 it is probably interfearance this is done by logging on to the router with a cable and changing it any more info just ask

I think I experienced the same problem you're describing. After installing the NetGear USB adapter, Windows XP stopped using the "friendly" way of logging on -- where it has a nice icon for each user -- and started using the "ugly" logon. You get a username/password dialog box.

I checked with NetGear tech support, and they sent me the following steps:

1. After installing the new driver/utility for WG111v2, click Start --
Run and type regedit.
2. When the registry editor opens browse to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software /Microsoft/Windows NT/Current Version/WINLOGON.
3. Delete the key named GINAdll.
4. Afterward you may want to go back into the control panel and check
the 'change the way users log on or off' and make sure the welcome
screen and fast user switching are both checked.

They also included the common sense caution that you should not edit your registry unless you know what you're doing. You can screw up your computer by improperly editing your registry. However, the steps are easy enough to follow that you should be safe if you exercise caution.

I would add that this didn't fully solve my problem. Although things work fairly well in most cases, when I wake up my machine after it has gone to sleep (due to a period of inactivity), the screen is messed up. Instead of giving me the normal logon screen, I get a messed up version of my desktop, and I am not able to log on. I have to turn off the computer's power and restart it.

To work around this problem, I try to always shut down completely when I log off instead of allowing the machine to go to sleep.

Here are some troubleshooting steps that I suggest you try:

1. Check physical connections.

a. Connect the modem to the Internet port of the router. The Internet “i” LED on the front of the router should light up.
b. Connect the computer to one of the four LAN ports (i.e port 1, 2, 3 or 4) on the back of the router. The corresponding port light where you connected the computer should be lit up.

2. Access the router's web-based utility.

a. Please open any web browser like Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator.
b. Connect to the router by typing http://routerlogin.com/basicsetting.htm or http://192.168.1.1 in the address field and click Enter or Return key.
c. A window will prompt for a user name and password. By default, the user name is "admin" and the password is "password".

Note: If you were unable to access the router's web-based utility, you may reset the router to restore the settings to factory default.

To reset the router:

a. Please push the reset button at the back of the router and release after 30 seconds.
b. Unplug the power adapter for 10 seconds and then plug it back in.

3. Configure the router.

If your Internet Service Provider is using a cable connection, please follow the steps below:

a. Click on Basic Settings under Setup tab.
b. Select No for Does Your Internet Connection Require A Login?.
c. Scroll down on the center page and look for the Router MAC Address section. Set it to Use computer MAC address and click on the Apply button.

If your Internet Service Provider is using a DSL connection, please follow the steps below:

a. Click on Basic Settings.
b. Select Yes for Does Your Internet Connection Require A Login?.
c. Select Other on the Internet Service Provider drop down box.
d. Enter your ISP's username (username@ISPdomain) and password. Then, click on Apply.

4. Configure the wireless settings.

a. Click on the Wireless Settings under Setup.
b. Change the SSID to any unique name.
c. Scroll down, look for the Security Options settings and select WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy).
d. Set the Authentication type to "Automatic" and the Encryption Strength to "64bit".
e. Leave the Passphrase field blank, select Key 1 and enter a 10-digit number.

Note: The 10-digit number you typed in the key 1 will be the password or network key for the wireless connection.

f. Click Apply button to save the changes.
g. Go to Router Status under Maintenance tab and check if there is an IP address under Internet port. If it's 0.0.0.0, do a power cycle.

5. Power cycle.

a. Power off the modem, router and computers.
b. Turn on the power of the modem first and wait for it to initialize, the lights to stop blinking.
c. Power back the router and the computers. Check if it will be able to get online.

If you have wireless computers, you can connect them wireless to the router. Kindly follow the instructions below:

6. Connect wireless computer to the router.

If you are using Windows XP with Service Pack 1, please follow the steps below:

a. Please right click on the Wireless icon on the right lower end portion of your computer.
b. Then click on View Available Wireless Networks.
c. Click on the Advanced tab.
d. Please delete all the preferred networks then click on OK.
e. Right click on the Wireless icon again and click on View Available Wireless Network. Please select your network and click on Connect. It will ask you for the network key.
f. Please type in the network key and then confirm it. Network key is the password you type on the key 1 of the wireless settings of the router.
g. Make sure not to enable IEEE and then click on Connect.

If you are using Windows XP with Service Pack 2, please follow the steps below:

a. Please right click on the Wireless icon on the right lower end portion of your computer.
b. Then click on View Available Wireless Networks.
c. Click on the Change Advanced Settings.
d. Click on the Wireless Networks tab remove all the preferred networks then click on OK.
e. Right click on the Wireless icon then click on View Available Wireless Networks.
f. Select your network and click on Connect.
g. It will ask you for the network key. Type in the network key and confirm it. Then click on Connect. Network key is the password you type on the key 1 of the wireless settings of the router.

If you are using Windows Vista, please follow the steps below:

a. Click Start then select Connect To.
b. Connect to a network window will show up.
c. Select your wireless network and click Connect.
d. It will ask you for a network key. Type in the network key and confirm it. Then click on Connect.

From the above configuration, please check if you can now access the Internet.

For wireless N USB adapter

Wireless Adapter Installation

A. Install the software.

Note: Firewall and anti-spyware need to be disabled. They sometimes treat software installation as a behavior of a spyware and therefore will prevent installation.

Windows XP:

1. Please power on your computer. Allow the operating system to boot up completely and log in as needed.
2. Insert the NETGEAR adapter Resource CD into your CD-ROM drive. The CD main page shown at the right will then load.
3. Click the Install Driver & Utility.
4. Please make sure that you follow the Install Shield Wizard steps. Click Finish when done and turn off your computer.

Windows 2000/ME/Win98SE:

Note: Windows 2000 may require you to be logged on with administrator rights.

1. Please power on your computer. Allow the operating system to boot up completely and log in as needed.
2. Insert the NETGEAR adapter resource CD into your CD-ROM drive. The setup page will then load.
3. Afterwards, click on the Install Driver & Utility link.
4. Make sure to follow the Install Shield Wizard steps, and click Finish when done to restart your computer.

B. Install the adapter.

Windows XP:

1. Please make sure that you shut down the PC first and then remove the power cord.
2. Please insert the NETGEAR adapter into the available expansion slot.

Note: If you have PCI adapter, connect the antenna to the adapter, making sure the antenna is in the upright position.

3. Reconnect the power cord and reboot the computer.
4. When the Found New Hardware Wizard displays, please click on Next and then follow the prompt. If you are prompted with a Windows XP Logo testing message, just click on Continue Anyway.
5. After the installation completes, click Finish to close the wizard.

Windows 2000/ME/Win98SE:

1. Please make sure that you shut down the PC first and then remove the power cord.
2. Insert the NETGEAR adapter into the available expansion slot.

Note: If you have PCI adapter, connect the antenna to the adapter, making sure the antenna is in the upright position.

3. Reconnect the power cord and reboot the computer.
4. On the Found New Hardware Wizard, click on Next, then follow the prompt to proceed.
5. After the installation completes, click Finish to close the wizard. Please make sure that you can see the NETGEAR icon located at the lower right portion of your computer screen.

Note: If Windows displays Digital Signature Not Found warning, click Yes to continue.

C. Configure the NETGEAR adapter.

1. Please Double click on the NETGEAR icon on the right lower end portion of your computer.

Note: If you do not see the icon, click on Start and go to Programs. Locate the NETGEAR Utility and click on the NETGEAR Smart Configuration Utility.

2. Click on the Networks tab.
3. Click on the Scan button.
4. Select the Network Name or SSID of your wireless network.
5. Click on the Connect button.
6. You will be directed to the Settings tab.
7. Type a name for the Profile.
8. The Network Name (SSID) will be the same with your wireless network.
9. Make sure that the Network Type is set to Access Point (Infrastructure).
10. Select the Security that you are using on your wireless router.
11. Click on Save Profile.
12. Click on the Apply button.

SOURCE: Have wireless usb adapter netgear wg11v2. I think

Go to netgear.com site download the driver (if you don't already have it) for your system and device. Install driver and software before you hook ujp device then plug in when it tells you to.

My wireless adaptor will not connect to a web page


I would suggest try upgrading the driver you have . Go to http://kbserver.netgear.com/release_notes/d102869.asp . They upgraded firmware says it has "Fixed the long waiting on the Windows XP Service Pack 2."

I have a wireless netgear usb adapter and nothing else, its not installed on my computer and I want to put it on, it wont work, what do i need to get my usb wireless adapter to work??? It is a wg111t...


You first need to install the driver. You can download it here:
http://kbserver.netgear.com/products/wg111t.asp (it should have came with your adaptor)

You must also have a wireless router available for this to work, or in an area that has WiFi available.

Connection problem


if it's going offline, then it's losing the signal, or is recieving a low signal, it should be at 54mbps but when it gets below around 24mbps, it will disconnect and look for a stronger connection in your area, or disconnect from the net altogether.

 

Put your router in a higher and better line of sight to your adapter, walls and floors can block the signal and check that it's not your router that is losing the connection.

Netgear wireless adapter


When you say home bases, i assume you mean desktop pc's. If the channel you mention is the channel that the router works off eg channel 11 then all wireless adapters have to be set to channel 11, or the same channel as the router. The reason for one disconnecting from the internet will probably be the adapter losing the signal because of obstacles like walls and doors, as if the signal gets too low then the reciever cannot connect properly with the router, hence dropping the connection. Try the router in a different higher position or at a phone socket nearer the troubled pc. The connection accross the network should be atleast good and at 54 MBPS, anything less may not connect properly. The laptops will tend to have a stronger connection as most have a signal up booster built in the screen.
