Question about Garmin GPS
Take it back for an exchange. Looks like a firmware/software problem, but could be a hardware fault, also. If you run it by a Car Audio Installation facility, they can usually tell you what's going on, and whether there's a simple fix or not.
Myself, I don't trust things that don't work out of the box. Sometimes, in the case of complex devices, it's a setting, but these devices should power up and load, and turn off when you want them to.
