That means that you know your calc crashed. This can be caused by taking out the batteries durring running time, happened just randomly. Well nothing to fear just press clear and it should go away but if it stays on that screen you have problems and is best to try some of these methods. Take out all the bateries and press and hold the on button for 30 seconds. Put the batteries back in and it should have reset. Warning you should archive everything incase this happens. To archive go to 2nd mem and hit enter to put a astrick next to the app (meaning archived)

SOURCE: my TI-83 plus calculator doesn't work

As battery gets drained, the screen contrast dims. But when you change batteries, some times the contrast is reset to some low value and the screen appears dead: it is so light that you do not see anything, and you think the calculator is malfunctioning. This is the most frequent reason users think the calculator refuses to turn ON. And I hope that is the case now.
To correct that, you must increase screen contrast: draken the screen a bit. To do so

  1. press [2nd] key and release it.
  2. Press the Up arrow and HOLD pressure.
  3. Keep pressing the arrow key until screen is dark enough.
If that solve your problem that is good, rate the post accordingly.. If that does not, do not get irate and berate the post. Post a comment here describing what you did and what message (if any) calculator returned, and I will give you further diagnostic steps.

I have an old TI-83 and there are vertical lines across the screen which have dead pixels, I assume. Can this be repaired or do I have to buy a new one.

While someone skilled in electronics may be able to fix it with enough time, the cost in time and labor would far outweigh the cost of a new calculator.

I'm using a TI-83 Plus calculator. Halfway through my screen there is a straight line preventing me from using the top half of the screen. No matter what I do I can only use the bottom half. Is there...

How to find the polynomial roots in TI-83 Plus

One way is to use the Polynomial Root Finder and Simultaneous Equation Solver app.

Press the APPS key, then select PlySmlt2 and press ENTER. Press ENTER to get past the opening screen, then select "POLY ROOT FINDER" and press ENTER. Select the order of the polynomial and other settings as desired. Press F5 (the GRAPH key) to go to the next screen. Enter the polynomial coefficients, then press F5 to solve. The next screen will show you the roots (unless you selected real roots and the polynomial doesn't have any real roots).

If you don't have the app installed, you can download it from

I can't get my TI-83 Plus to stop providing answers in scientific form.

Press MODE to bring up the mode screen. Highlight "NORMAL" on the first line and press ENTER. On the second line highlight either "FLOAT" or the number of digits you want to the right of the decimal point and press ENTER. Press 2ND [QUIT] to exit the mode screen.

Be aware that if the answer cannot be displayed in twelve digits or if the magnitude is less than .001 then the calculator will always display the value in scientific notation.

How do i graph a vertical line?

If you just want to draw figures (not graphs) on the calculator you should use the [Draw] command.
Press [2nd] [PRGM] (DRAW)
Select [4:Vertical]
Command echoes on main screen as Vertical
Enter the x-value where you want the line drawn (ex: 2) and press ENTER
You will get a vertical line at x=2.
