Question about Craftsman 20 hp 42 in. Deck Lawn Tractor - CA Model

Open Question

My lawnmower has started doing a gallop sort of thing where it revs and then slows instantly to then rev again. I have found that if I pull the choke lever about 20% or so the engine smooths right out. Another way to describe the symptom is that it sounds like a pressure washer does when you release the trigger and stop the water flow. I have taken the carb off and blew carb cleaner through the ports after removing the needle and seat. This made no difference to the way it runs. Can you please give me some advice as to what to do?

Replace the spark-plug, check the quality of the fuel(gas that is mixed or was stored more then three months is stale and wont fire correctly) make sure the fuel and air filter not clogged. If there is no change then your problem may be more technical, a nest may be restricting the govenor or you missed something with the carb and there still is debre causing it to stall.

Sounds like a restriction in your carb, not getting enough gas. I would clean out the carb again.

Sounds like a bad coil to me ... it only makes sense that has the heat from the engine transfers into the coil the coil windings expand and causes a open resulting in ignition failure and no spark to the plugs... if you need parts try

There are several things that could be going on, but what you said in your description about the dead man switch in the seat may need your attention first. The switch it self could also be bad. After you rule this out the next thing I would check is the fuel shut off solenoid located on the carb when you turn the key on to run you should hear a click and feel it in the solenoid. After this you may have a fuel pump issue or a coil issue. but from what you I have described I believethe first 2 itmes I mentioned should fix your problem

Briggs Stratton 5hp I/C starts ok, runs, but will not rev

My money is on a partial blockage of the main jet or the passageway to it. You're having to force it to run through the idle jet by fully choking the incoming air. There's not enough gas coming in with the choke open to allow it to run.

I'm thiniking total carb disassembly, carb cleaner and an air compressor combined with a ton of patience will take care of the issue.

Choke is an adjustment to air intake to adjust fuel/air mixture and is heat related. Do not fully open choke as soon as it starts. Gradually open as the trimmer warms up. If a happy medium can not be found then fuel adjustments will be needed on carburetor.

Flooding petrol

Saw is getting flooded? Does the saw run? After a few pulls with the choke on the saw should fire, Open the choke and in a couple of pulls the saw should start. If you have flooded thee saw you can hold it on the ground with your knee, hold full throttle and in up to ten pulls it should go with a slow start and some smoke, give it rev and away you go. What is the starting procedure?

Start with the choke on full press the fuel siphon button till the lines are full of fuel. pull handle until it tries to start but stops. move the choke to half then start again. let it run for 60 seconds on full. don't move the choke to full or it will stop. Either slow the revs and then put the choke on full or keep the revs high and slowly move the choke to full (to allow the governor to slowly advance with the new revs)

Motor wont rev up when starting cold with choke on trys to run on idle but will not rev up

the motor wont rev high on choke.the motor is suppose to fire once on choke. then turn the choke off.pull the start cord and the motor should start and run.check that the throttle conrol is on full. it should run fine.

Forgot how tostart it

Ensure you have the correct Fuel / Oil mix for your machine first.

Find the choke knob and turn to the closed position.
Find the Primer Bulb and pump it until it is full of fuel, once the bulb is full give it 3 pumps (If the primer bulb is already full of fuel just give it 3 pumps)
Make sure the ignition switch is in the "I" position and not the"O" position.
Pull start! (should take no more than 3-4 pulls before it fires)
Once it fires it may die instantly.... if so cancel the choke and pull start (should fire again on first pull)
If it does not die and it keeps running, cancel the choke while maintaining the engine's rev's.

Choke and exaust problem

On this vintage bike you may find your exhaust parts in a bike salvage yard. As for as the choke and engine revving this is typical of this choke design. My suggestion is get quieter pipes if your worried about neighbors... If your one of mine I'll let you know about it! LOL! Seriosly though I do not recall and adjustment that would allow you to not have so many rev's I know all my old carbbed bikes did the same thing, only thing to do is slow it down aquickly as possible or don't use full choke. My new bikes are all injected so no more choke...Possibly upgrade....

GSX750FX running problem

needs the carbs cleaned out, and possibly some new spark plugs. If it has been over 4K since the plugs were changed, they need replacing also.

I broke down and purchased a new crank shaft sensor . It cost $15000 hated to spend it because everbody told me they just don't fail , and why would it when it worked fine before the motor was rebuilt. IT FIXED IT.
