Power supply humming

I think you have a 110 volt machine on which you are using a step down transformer. If so it seems that the voltage from the transformer is high or the current factor requirement is also insufficient . which can produce the hum or heat. Make sure the voltage is steady or else you will need to use a stabilizer or a proper power supply that is actually catering to the requirement of the machine. You have not mentioned the power factor of the machine and i suspect that the power supply used externally is insufficient.

I have changed power supply of Aspire T180 to upgrade, no response from my desktop

you may have electrocuted motherboard if you did not stay grounded while putting in power unit. touching MB while not grounded can cause really bad issues. if cpu heatsink fan is not spinning when power on, then that would stop boot up. if graphics card boot files corrupted then no boot either. check to see none of the capacitors on MB are swollen at cross+ top. if they are bulging then they could have blown stopping power from reaching MB. things you need to check.
also, ac adapter may be bad.

Hello there! Got an old Philips plasma tv 42PF9945 with Samsung power supply LJ44-00049A that seems to be dead. LED's are off, there's no stdby voltage, all it's doing is a very silent sound...

Kris are you sure of that model number... That supply is most commonly found in a Philips 42FD9935/17 but they could have revived it for your model too I guess, neither were high-end units.
You would need several pieces of test equipment to properly check the supply and if you're not a tech I doubt you would have made such an investment. Best advice take to a qualified tech or just replace the supply. Try ModusLink, Tristate Module or Shop Jimmy for a replacement.

Power button won't start

It is possible that your power supply unit went out and will need to be replaced. Also the power button itself may have gone bad as well. It is either one or the other. Power Supply Units are located inside the box of your computer

It may be a good idea to take this in to a local shop to have this done if you have never done this before. Power button switches look like this.
jcrowder0027_3.jpg
Depending on your computer the power supply unit and power switch may be different as well. If you know what you are doing you can replace these pretty easily the degree of difficulty is about a 3 on a scale of 10 so not that hard all you have to do is plug in everything that came out and remember where the wires go. Mark them so that you will not forget I use a b c d on and on for each part or wire.
You can obtain a new power supply unit pretty cheap. Just take the old with you when you go to buy one. If you go online to buy one just make sure that you have the same one match the case numbers and you should be fine. Most power supply units are ATX it will tell you on the old one. I would start there and change this out. Thanks for using FixYa! please vote for me. John

Faulty power supply unit?

You can contact the manufacture to purchase the power supply module.

However, there are other boards in the set that can easily cause the power supply failure because something went defective. It is also possible that the power supply is not defective, but it is in protect mode because of a failure on another board, or in some other device in the set.

The tech would follow procedure from the service manual using the proper instrumentation and diagnostics to determine the defective board(s). Then he would replace the necessary modules and or parts to get the set working again.

In the end if you try fixing this yourself, you can end up spending a few hundred dollars on a power supply and only find that it blows again or goes in to protect mode because the original fault was not determined and corrected.

Monitor won't power on

PF747 has internal switch-mode power supply. Old LCD monitors have external low voltage (12VDC) power supply which can easily be replaced by any brand provided the voltage and current is the same. On your monitor, th epower supply module is built inside the unit. When you say that the LED is flashing, this means two things, 1. The power supply is attempting to start, but the load (or current) is above its limit and it automatically switch off, then tries to start again and so on. This can be a problem with the load (minitor intelligence or the mainboard, hv supply for the flourecent back supply) 2. It can be that the power supply module is defective In any any case, the only way to find out is to disconnect the load from the internal power supply (the monitor have to be opened), and measure the voltage at the terminal. In many devices the output will be 12 volts and in some cases there will be also 5volds supply. If there are correct voltage present, then the supply is OK and most probably the mainboard or the HV supply is defective. If there are no voltage present, then the power supply module is defective. You can either fix this module, replace with exact new module or if you have a spare external powersupply, you can use this to provide the power to the internal circuit. The last option is recommended only if you have experience in electronics repair. If you cannot do the repair yourself and will cost USD200, buy a new monitor.

Loss of power

I have a similar scanner, scanjet 5470c which is using the same power supply as 5400c and 5490c
2 weeks ago the scanner stopped working, yesterday i checked the scanner and found out that there was no power (12V)
the power module (black box) going into the 220V is a plastic box without service possibility. I took a screwdriver and a hammer to open the box. Inside the box i found a lot of electronics and yes a Fuse aswell. I did not have spare fuses, so like all bad boys i replaced the fuse with a wire, and guess what? .. yep I blew several main fuses in the house and now have a burned-out power supply.
the power module is still available at the HP Parts Store the part number is C8517-84201 i see a list price of 23 EUR

Before a buy a new power module I will first test the scanner with a spare 12VDC and see if he still works.

I will come back and tell you if it works...
