to do a format you must boot the pc with the disc in the drive, and set pc to boot from dvd, in boot options, then when it comes to install options press options and format, this will do a wipe/format and you should be ok from then.

Check the BIOS, the boot start up configuration to see if there is an option to boot up with a USB device. If not then it is not possible with your laptop because there is no boot USB driver.

You can format your hard disk by booting up with Windows CD installation and follow the steps to delete the partition, then creat a new partition, then format the partition.
OR
Download the Hiren's Boot CD and burn it onto a CD, then insert it into the laptop and get the laptop to boot up on the Hiren's CD.
One of the options on Hiren is DOS utilities - it contains a format program.
This is a very useful utilities CD and it a Linux boot CD which contains quite a lot of Utility programs including a password removal program.

If the hard drive has been formatted it will not boot unless you install an operating system. If you had wanted to format and leave the disk able to boot the correct command is Format "Disk Letter":/S

your partition is in raw file system, so windows will not be able to format/delete. you have to delete it using a non windows tool. get hiren boot cd or paragon partition manager. born it to a cd. boot from it and select format from the file menu to format the harddisk. this time format it in ntfs file system format

It sounds like your mainboard is not set up to allow for a SATA boot drive.
Have a look in your bios and ensure the boot order is set to the SATA drive first
Then, make sure the SATA drive is formatted and has an operating system installed.
Alternatively, boot the system from a boot disk ( your XP or Vista disk will allow this) and check to see if the board can see the drive and can read the drive if it is already formatted.
If not, format it and install the O/S onto it and make sure you answer YES to the question " do you wish to boot from this drive?"
Both my systems use SATA drives and I only had a boot fault because the "pre-formatted drive" I bought was not formatted and formatting under windows during O/S installation solved this issue..

your boot file is corrupt so it wont boot u will need to use a computer to format it. plug the mp3 player into ur computer go to my computer right click the mp3 player and select format. Format will wipe everything off ur mp3 player

what do you want to format your hard drive so you can install a fresh windows install? if so you need to go into your bios and set the computer to boot from cd rom and then you can boot from your windows cd an format your computer from there

make sure your hard disk is error free Try formating the disk with FAT first ,if it doesn't work out the try disk utilities .
