Computer shutsdown and restarts automatically

My 2004 compaq logs off windows and powers down on its own then tries to start back up repeatedly. I've tried replacing the powers supply and a complete tear down and cleaning of all components nothing works. The computer works fine for about 15 minutes then logs off windows and powers down just to try and start backup again over and over. Its about made me pull my hair out

Have you recently installed some new software, hardware or driver?

    Which OS are you using?

Do you have an updated virus scanner installed?

Once it restarts, do you get another 15 mins, or does it shut down right away again?

My computer trys to turn on but just sits there on and off on and off

Does it show a blue screen? If so you want to disable the automatic restart so you can read the error message.
To run the check disk utility you will need a repair disc ora operating system disc. Put the disc in the cd drive and boot fromit. You want to get to the Dos Command Prompt (Black screen with whiteletters) and type the following command: chkdsk /r
Check disk will run well over an hour or two and you will notice thepercentages going from high to low, this is normal. Let it run tocompletion. Then reboot machine.

If check disk fails to solve your problem you might have to reinstall windows.Try doing a Repair Install that way you don't loose your data, documents, music, pictures, videos or programs.

In windows xp you get to the dos command prompt by selecting R for repair whenthe options appear.

In Vista and Windows 7 you want to get to the recoveryconsole and look down at the bottom of the window for the Dos Command.

I can't shut down my PC,It restarts again!

This behavior may occur if Windows stops responding during a typical operation or during the shutdown process. By default, the computer is configured to automatically restart when Windows stops responding. To view this setting, follow these steps:
  1. Click the Start button, right-click My Computer, click Properties, click the Advanced tab, and then click Settings under Start up and Recovery.
  2. Under System Failure, view the Automatically restart check box. If the Automatically restart check box is selected, Windows automatically restarts if the computer stops unexpectedly.
If your computer constantly restarts while you are using it, or if you are trying to shut down the computer after it has stopped unexpectedly, click to clear the Automatically restart check box. If you clear this check box, you receive an error message when the computer stops responding. This error message may describe the cause of the problem. You can also review the system log in Event Viewer to view the critical stop error that occurs when the computer restarts. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base: 308427 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308427/ ) HOW TO: View and manage event logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP To configure the way that Windows responds when the computer stops unexpectedly, follow these steps.

Note: You must be logged on as an administrator or a member of the Administrators group to complete this procedure. If your computer is connected to a network, network policy settings may prevent you from completing this procedure.
  1. Log on to the host computer as either an administrator or the owner.
  2. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
  3. Under Pick a category, click Performance and Maintenance.
  4. Under the or pick a Control Panel icon section, click System.
  5. Click the Advanced tab, and then click Settings under Startup and Recovery.
  6. Click to select any one of the following check boxes under System Failure:
    • Write an event to the system log
    • Send an administrative alert
    • Automatically restart
At last if nothing works then clear the "Star up"
  7. C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Start up
If you are not satisfied then If you are using XP then repair it.

thanks

Turn on the computer it goes to window screen and than turn off with out touching anything

so, it automatically shuts down? try turning on your pc and do not wait for it to bbot to windows. instead, immediately tap on F8 key several times as soon as you see that there is power. it should lead you to Windows advanced options menu, highlight disable automatic restart on system failure using your down arrow keys then press enter. it should start normally or if problem still persists, try safe mode instead. it would isolate the issue. if in safemode it will still shutdown automatically then you need to replace your harddrive. if not, then you should just reinstall your operating system to have your system work fine.

Downloaded windows automatic update stuck on 3 of 3 for last few days. tried last known good config does nothing, i always return to updating 3 of 3 cannot get my comp to do anything else. help desperately...

An issue has been identified by Microsoft that, after installing Windows Updates, a Computer displays a Configuring updates: stage 3 of 3. 0% complete message, reboots, comes back to that message again, and repeats the cycle. This problem occurs when Windows Update is attempting to install update 937287.

Follow this procedure to resolve the error:

1. Remove all connected peripheral Devices from the Computer.

2. Press and hold the power button until the Computer completely shuts down.

3. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.

4. Leave the Computer without any power for at least 30 seconds.

5. Reconnect the Computer to the power supply and then turn it back on.

6. Allow the Computer to start normally.

NOTE 1: Once the Computer has completely started into the Operating System, Windows Updates should automatically finish installing the update. If the update again fails to install completely, restart the Computer in Safe Mode (by tapping the F8 Kay at Start-up) and use the System Restore feature to return the Computer to a time before the issue started.

Click the Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System Restore.

NOTE 2: To avoid this issue, obtain and install update 937287 from the Microsoft Download Center separately from all other updates on the Windows Update site. Install the update that applies to your version of Windows Vista so that you can successfully install future updates.

For more information about this error, refer to the Microsoft KB Article ID 949358.

Good Luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When i start the computer the sign log in off shows up

Hi there!

no need to panic. This is a safety feature with Windows. If you log-off the computer will normally ask you if you want to log-on again. This would NOT turn off the computer. If you want to shut-down the computer, simply push the power button on your CPU.. This will automatically shut the computer off.

....im hoping you could rate this as: FIXYA!

Computer shutsdown unexpectedly

It sounds like it is overheating. Take the side off the case and see if your CPU fan works. Replace any fans that do not work or feel loose. And while you are at it, take a can of air and blow the dirt out of it.
Leaving it off overnight will not prevent it from overheating. A computer can overheat in a matter of seconds under the right circumstances.

Hi Ford,
have you tried to
click on start, select shutdown and from there select restart?

or you can, hold down the power button until the computer shutsdown then press the power button again, but this is not recommended, doing the above procedure is better.
