Question about Canon PowerShot A75 Digital Camera

2 Answers

LCD screen is black except in stitch assist mode.

Would like my screen back. I can still take pictures and download them onto my computer but cannot see them on the screen. I have removed and replaced the batteries. I have held set and then turned on the power as suggested in the book. I have tried resetting to default as per page 73 in the manual when in stitch assist mode. The prompts display but nothing changes. any further suggestions.

This sounds like it might be a defective CCD imager. If so, Canon should fix this for you for free, including free shipping both ways. This is regardless of your camera's warranty status. Please check the following two links for more info:

Hi There,

You say that everything looks fine except the LCD. If it's true , you will be able to take pictures right? so you try to take pictures and downloaded into the computer.

after this step we know what to do in the future.

let me know the progress.

The screen has a small picture with a covered in part to the left of the picture. Above the picture is a 2 and 1 with an arrow going from the 1 to the 2

You're in Stitch Assist (Panorama) mode. Here's your user manual directly from Canon. Page 45 and 46 explains Stitch Assist mode. Page 35 and 36 explains how to select it, and in your case, deselect it.

Black Screen

But does it take usefull pictures? I mean, after you take the picture, can you download it onto the computer?

  • If yes, you probably deactivated the back LCD by mistake. Look for a "display" button (or similar) and push it. It will cycle through all of the available display modes.

  • If not, it's probably a software error. Take the camera to a local electronist or Canon dealer for repairs.

No display except in stitch assist and camera shoot mode

Think that you might have accidentally pressed the DISP or DISPLAY button on the back of your camera. This manually turns the LCD display on and off to save batteries. You would then use the optical viewfinder in its place. To turn the screen back on, just press the DISP button one more time.

No display powershot a75

Did you get a solution to your problem? I am experiencing the exact same thing with my A75. Still takes pictures and displays them for the 2 second preview, then back to black. And they download fine, too. But I get the same black screen in every mode except stitch assist and movie mode. Thanks.

Actually this sounds like it might be a defective CCD imager. Take a picture while the screen is black and download it to your computer. Is the picture also black? If so, Canon should fix this for you for free, including free shipping both ways. This is regardless of your camera's warranty status. Please check the following two links for more info:

A85 LCD stays off in all modes except "stitch"

Hi Toonz
I have exactly the same problem as Shimoni and Antonio with my 4 years old A85.
But sorry, its not a problem of the CCD, cause we all get a clear actual picture on the LCD but just in stitch mode! In any other shooting or playback mode the LCD is dark. So the sensor must be working well and Canon Germany doesnt repair for free. Our failure is different and we have to pay much more than the camera is worth ;-((

LCD Monitor remains black except in stitch assist mode

Can you see the menus?? Can you see pics in "reveiw" mode? If yes, and this is only a "taking picture" issue, then the LCD is good. You probably have a bad CCD. Canon USA will repair this for free. Go here for details. They will send you 2 emails. One with the UPS label and another with info sheets to be sent with the defective camera

Pictures are black

If you can display pictures in playback mode but screen is black in capture mode then the CCD sensor has stopped working and needs replacing.

If the camers takes pictures but the LCD remains lack - this us usually a back light failure [In which case you should see shadow images] or a connector is off whereby you see nothing. Nothing for you to do here except to get onto Sony customer support - where I suspect if the camera is more than a year old you will be looking at the price of a new camera.
