Question about Emerson Quiet Kool 10NW16K Air Conditioner

1 Answer

My AC unit leaks an inordinate amount of water into the apartment. Most of the times it happens when the humidity is high. I have to put rags inder the unit to absorb the water & change the rag after each hour as the rag is drenched. Water leaks mainly from undrneath control panel. I want to purchase another emerson unit as it is QUIET, but not if it will leak water profusely.

How do I determine whether or not condensate should be dripping from a window ac?

The amount of condensate depends upon the relative humidity of the air. When the humidity is high, the AC unit will create more condensate and when humidity is low less is created. As long as the AC unit is working properly, I would not get overly concerned about it.

Taking the Confusion Out of Using a Dehumidier

Many consumers are confused about setting the proper levels of humidity on dehumidifier units. And then think something is mechanically wrong with the unit. When in fact, over 70% of the time it operator error. That and a lack of proper routine maintenance are the problem.

The numbers on the LED screen represent the amount of humidity you want to maintain. Not the amount you want to remove. For example: If you set the level at 70%, which is rather high, more than likely the unit may start up momentarily and then shut OFF. That's because the setting is to high. Now, if you set it at 45%, the unit will turn ON and run until either the bucket is full and/or the humidity level has reached 45%.

Here's a good rule of thumb if you use your humidifier year round.

In the Winter you want to maintain a humidity level of 50 to 60%. The moister the air, the more comfortable it will feel. Plus, the humidity helps eliminate static electricity in the air.

Conversely, in the hot, humid Summer months, you want to keep the humidity level as low as possible (35% or less). Also, if you have ceiling fans, using them 24 hours a day, helps to move the air and generate a windchill, which fools your body into thinking it's cooler than what it really is. At the same time, it's saving on energy costs by not having to run your AC as much, because the dehumidifier is removing the humidity.

Just remember, the higher the setting, the higher the humidity level will stay. The lower the setting, the more humidity will be removed and the more comfortable you'll feel in the Summer.

And don't forget Routine Maintenance. Clean the air intake filter regularly. Clean and wipe down the refrigerant coils every 60 days. And don't allow water to remain in the collection bucket to long. As mold can build up in it.

Speaking of which, the water in the bucket, when fresh, is great for watering house plants. Because, when it's fresh, it's distilled water. No chlorine or minerals.

I have a Kenmore C120 portable air conditioner. It is leaking water from the back bottom. There is a white drain but this unit is supposed to self evaporate. At least it did last year. Now it is leaking...

Interestingly, your Kenmore Portable AC is manufactured by Delonghi. Occasionally, what you are experiencing happens when the humidity level is high and the air intake filter needs to be cleaned.
That also means that you will need to drain the tank, at least once.

You know where the drain plug is, so you can either carefully take it outside to drain or put a low sided container, capable of holding 1 1/2 quarts of water under the drain plug. If you drain it inside, turn the Master ON/OFF Switch to OFF and unplug the unit, before attempting to drain it.

Hope this helped you to solve the problem.

We have a MSS3.3 air con and it seems to spit out drips of water, can u tell me why, is there something we need fixed on it

Water vapor in the air is condensing on the expansion coils. Typically the water should run down the coils and drip out a drain at the bottom of the AC unit. Over time, the drain can become plugged with dust from the air, and when that happens the water can build up inside the AC and it will blow into the refrigerated side.
But sometimes, if there is a high amount of humidity in the air, the condensate will just blow off the cold expansion coils and there isn't much you can do about it.

How can I determine if the ac is removing the correct amount of moisture from the air?

tech answer is:3 pints of water per hour per 1 ton of cooling.
General rule of thumb is 20-25% of the capacity of the unit is devoted to dehumidifying.
If unit runs constantly and the temp really does not seem to be effected, unit is probably too small. If unit runs and cycles off frequently, i.e. short run times, and humidity is high, unit is too big.

Hope this helps
