Question about Dryers

1 Answer

We have an older Kenmore Ultra Fabric care 80 series dryer that has started to not turn off a week ago. My husband unplugged it two nights ago then when we went to plug it back in, it won't start. It's getting power (it sparked when he was testing a wire in the back) - is it the thermo fuse, we need to clean the blocked vent tube or something else. Please advise. Thanks! Steph

    Rylee,
One thing to add, would that stop the dryer from spinning too? I believe my husband has replaced that before - is that normal to have to replace that twice?
    Thank you!

    Hi Rylee-
I have an update and I wanted to make sure you have all the info (recapped below), see if you still think it's the belt, thermo fuse or maybe now, timer??

A week ago the dryer wouldn't stop spinning and it was heating. The fact that it was acting oddly made my husband unplug it. When he plugged it back in, it would not turn on. At that point, we checked the fuses, house fuses (which were fine), and we knew the dryer was getting power because of the sparks (I mentioned earlier).

My husband took off the back cover of the control panel and discovered 3 wires with some burn damage/melting. The red wire, the black wire at (*9 o'clock) and what he believes was a small ground wire. He thinks that the failure of the dryer to stop running coupled with the burn evidence is pretty strong evidence it's the timer. He cut off the burn parts of the wire, replaced the female clips and reattached the wires to timer but no luck.

If the dryer was heating to begin with, but there was an obvious problem with it shutting off? Is that thermo fuse? It now seems it's a timer issue. Although, he hasn't checked, the same logic suggests it is not a belt issue either. Timers are pretty expensive, can you think of anything else this may be - is there another part that may have failed causing the surge to the timer wires.

    Thanks again for your advise.

Hi Steph,

Thanks for using FixYa. Yes you are right, it seems to be an issue with the Thermal Fuse going bad and needs to be replaced. It is mounted to the exhaust duct inside the back cover panel. You can check it for continuity with an ohm meter, no continuity means the fuse is bad and you need to replace it. Please do accept the solution if the issue is resolved or post a comment for further assistance.

Thanks
Rylee

If it wont spin at all then it is the belt that has gone bad and should be replaced.

Thanks for your reply Steph, from what all you have described it seems to be the Thermal fuse that has gone bad, the belt appears to be working fine as the dryer was spinning. To start with you can test the continuity of the Thermal fuse, check between its two pins, no continuity means bad fuse and to check the timer you can also test it, replace the part that has gone bad. You can also check this repair manual that might help you for repairs. Please do accept the solution if the issue is resolved or post a comment for further assistance.

    Thanks
