Question about Sears Craftsman LiftMaster Chamberlain Garage Door Opener Wireless Keypad Model 976LM Security+

1 Answer

Garage door wont close - acts like there is an object in the way. If is detach the door from the sliding unit, the door closes easily. If I try running the slider down without the door attached, it stops very shortly after activation. If I close the dorr and activate the slider it completes it path. The door has increasingly been balky. At first if I shadowed the receiving unit the door would close but now nothing helps and I must manually lower the door. Suspect that the sensor has deteriorated over the 4 years it has been installed. Suggestions? TIA!

It sounds like the sun may be shining on and causing problems with the door sensors. Try using the cardboard tube from a roll of toilet tissue on the receiving sensor.

It could be the garage door motor that is acting up. Try closing it with the button in the garage. If that's not the case, you may need a different garage door opener.

You have a door sensor problem. The IR sensors found at the bottom of the door rails will need some attention.
Both have an LED visible. Is one on or none? If none are on, check the wiring. Older models had a plug in the rear of the sensor that corroded due to moisture, causing intermittent or no operation.
If 1 is on, check to be sure that they are aligned with each other. If they are crooked, the door will not close without holding the wall button (as you described). They are easily knocked out of alignment.
Check for cobwebs and debris blocking the sensors.
Replacement sensors are around $50 and are easily installed with just wire cutters and pliers. Remember to unplug the unit before replacing the sensors.

Garage door wont stay closed

have you gotten the instalation instructions out and go through the set up procedure
and why did you rewire the sensors ?
the settings are critical but not rocket science of course then if the problem still persists and you can confirm the sensors are working correctly
then you may have to replace the logic board on the unit
try doing a mock reinstall and adjust and see if the problem isnt something simple

On the side of the motor unit you will find the 'down limit control'. Using a small screwdriver turn this control in the same direction as the arrow printed on the cover. Some tweaking may be necessary to get it just right.

Power shuts down when I try to close or open

Your motor may be working too hard anad ripping the reset button on the garage door,
Try increasing the power on the unit ( should be some type of dial.) or the door may be jamming up somewhere, Try disconnecting the opener from the door and see if it goes up easily, the door might need service

Garage door opener (chain) motor runs in reverse. Trolley slides forward trying to close door, even though it is closed, instead of sliding toward motor to open door. Happened out of the blue - was

Loosen the chain enough that you can remove it from the sprocket. Run the opener until the sprocket turns counterclockwise and stops. With the door in the open position replace the chain. You will probably need to adjust your open and close limits per your owners manual.

Stripped gear

Try opening and closing your door by hand with the motor detached (detach it by pulling on the rope) It should open and close easily without a lot of effort. If it catches or is too heavy (possible broken spring) it will strip the gear. The door has to be working properly before you can attach an opener to it. If you lift your door up about waist high and let go of it . It should not go up or down but should stay in that position, This tells you that the springs are correctly adjusted

My sears garage door opener wont open or close the door

If you can get access to the back of your motor assembly on the ceiling and look where the wires are connected there should be a slide button that will have a list that will have you set the main unit to a position that will allow you to accept new remotes or reprogram for lost signal to existing remote. If all else fails there should be a phone number you can call listed on the unit and they can walk you through.
