Put the housing end in first, take the spool and hold the spool end against it and wind the spool in the air until the spring is wound tight, then install the spool back into the housing. you have to keep your fingers on each end of the spring and hold the spool relatively close to the housing, obviously, but it's not a hard trick to master.

SOURCE: rewinding starter spring on chainsaw

I was able to rewind the spring steel coil, but it took 2 people, one at each end, to wind it tightly and hold it tightly enough to fit back into the casing. The bend at the end of the coil must be re-inserted into its own retainer. It was not easy, and it takes some time to get this done. RH

SOURCE: Is there a trick to attaching the rewind spring to the pulley?

On the end of the spring there would be a loop or some other manner to attach to the pulley. Usually what you have to do it wind the spring tight (not to breaking point) and then put the loop into a slot in the pulley and push down while inserting the screw and washer to hold it in place

SOURCE: my pull cord ripped, and the spring came out how

I hope you have strong hands. Start by holding the inside end of the spring in one hand, then carefully wind the spring back into a circle tightly until you get to the other end. The finished diameter of the spring must be a little smaller than the area it goes back into. Put it back in, then replace the pulley like it was when you disassembled it.

DO I NEED SPECIAL TOOL TO REFIT COIL SPRING WHICH CAME OUT WHEN FITTING STARTER PULL CORD

There are special tools made for this job, however not needed for most jobs (makes easier). Clean the spring and lube slightly with silicone spray or light oil. Catch the end of the spring that would be the outer end onto slot or pin and slowly spiral the coil into place holding down coils as you turn(dont try to coil the spring then drop it in, take your time as you wind and maybe ask a freind to lend a third hand if your fingers get tired, once you start you cant stop). The inner part of the coil has a bent hook that will catch on the inner portion of the pull rewind. Lood at how the rewind catches this hook by turning the rewind in the direction that it turns when you pull the rope. When you pull the rope it winds the spring. If you put the spring in backwards the rewind spring will not catch. Once you got the spring in place, turn the rewind in the direction that it turns when you pull the rope until it stops, then release one turn and insert rope thru guide and into spool to tie knot. Slowly let rewing pull in new rope. Good luck

How to repair a poulan pp 136 trimmer? The rope to start won't rewind.

Most likely you have a broken return spring.whitch will involve removing the blower cover and putting in a new spring, and then reloading the tensionon it.there is trick to that but its hard to explain....you have to tuirn the rope holder the oppisite direction you want it to pull the rope in ,then you feed in the rope while holding the spring loaded then tie the string in and let go...Normally 4-5 rounds will do for a good recoil..Hope it helps

Pull cord broke on my craftsman gas push edger. I replaced cord but when I pull cord..It wont rewind but I can hear it trying to start

It sounds like you did not properly rewind the spring that is behind the spool that the cord would around, that spring is what rewinds the cord after pulling the cord.

The started cord will not recoil

remove the top cover. take the three or four screws out, turn cover over, the spring has broken or slipped. if it has slipped, remove the cord by untying the knoe in the handle, pull the cord from the inside of the pulley, remove it completely, hand rewind the spring in the opposite direction that it pulls in, holding it is a trick, get someone to hold it after you rewind it, rethread the cord thru the cover hole and thru the hole in the pulley, tie a knot in the end, pull it into the pulley and slowly release the pulley, carefully. put the handle on and replace the cover on the machine.

The pull cord will not rewind

Sounds like the rewind spring has broken or the starting spool is broken or the piston is stuck. You will have to take the machine apart to see what it is that stops it from rewinding. I'm thinking spring.Good luck...Lee

The pull start needs rewinding, the pull start came lose and goudged a groove in the fly wheel.

Recoil Spring Rewind
I invert and secure the housing and rewind the spring large coil to small (need eye protection, both hands and no women around work area!). I'm right handed so I tension the spring enough to insert it inside the previous coil while holding what has already been installed with my left about 180° from my right hand. The tension will hold the spring in the housing once completely inserted. Then bend slightly the inner most part to engage the starter spool. It will require about 2 turns of pretension for it to retract properly.
If you're lucky you can pull the cord out enough for a pretension then slightly raise and add the withdrawn cord to the spool. HTH

Soundas like the rewind spring is broken. Remove the top housing and see if you can reset the spring by removing the cord, hook up the broken end, rewind the spring with a screw driver...lock it in the tension position and then reinstall the cord.

Broken recoil spring

A new spring comes wound tight enough to be dropped into place in the starter housing (Easiest).

I invert and secure the housing and rewind the spring large coil to small (need eye protection, both hands and no women around work area!). It will require about 2 turns of pretension to retract properly.
If you're lucky you can pull the cord out enough for a pretension then slightly raise and add the withdrawn cord to the spool.

Both methods require about 2 turns of pretension to rewind the cord when pulled.
