Yes, but is it as good as using a head cleaning tape? Any precautions I need to take?

  • lindop_tim Sep 06, 2010

Also, how do I get to my heads? What do they look like? Am I risking damage hand-cleaning?

How can I access the heads?

Rubbing alcohol and a cotton swab

Make sure cotton swab aka q-tip is not soaked to the point that it is dripping alcohol. Just wet but not dripping. Then clean the head, make sure to get all of it. The cleaning tapes have the same alcohol in them but cotton swabs work much better I think.

Open up the tape door, you will see where the tape contacts are. This is the head, you can clean it with rubbing alcohol and a cotton swab.

JVC GR-DVL310 minDV camera plays with Red stripes or bars accross video..

You probably got a piece of q-tip stuck in the video head. try to run a chamos stick over the small pickups at the base of the drum from side to side, never up and down and you should be able to clean out the residue and fix your problem.

Video heads clogged - don't get cleaned with cleaning cassette

This needs to be solved at the shop if your product is under warranty.
ESLE
If you are adept at opening gadgets do this
Get a bottle carbon tetra chloride
Dip an end of ear buds and clean the heads without touching any plastic parts. Carbon tetra choloride dissolves plastic. The head look like a small "_" on the cylinder. There will be 2 of them

Will not eject tape

If your camcorder is JVC GY-DV550 and having a tape jam problem, It could be mechanical problem such as pinch roller or tape may be loose inside. I will try this just in case of loose tape. At VCR mode, press FF serveral times then REW same. Now try eject. If that did not work, you should take it to professional service facility near you for further diagnostic. Good luck, -james

Head cleaning required

i have the JVC MiniDV Digital Video Cleaning Cassette. I began having trouble when I was shooting DV24P and when I went to playback I noted audio dropouts. I'm using SONY Premium DVM60 tapes. I began having Head Cleaning Required message. I have ran the Cleaning Cassette and the message disappears, but even trying a brand new tape, switching to DV playback i get the error message. Luckily, the shoot i was on the master audio was being captured by a secondary device and we were able to simply use the video from my camera. Since then, I was able to play & capture both the video & audio previously recorded in HDV30P and I didnt receive an error message. Now though I cannot record any DV audio without dropouts. When I tested just moments ago, I was able to record HDV and both video & audio were clean, but during playback I still received the Head Cleaning message. Is the record head different from the playback head? Can you manually clean the heads by removing the plastic door cover with a lintfree cotton swab and rubbing alcohol (obviously disconnecting and removing all power & powering off prior to cleaning), the same way any previous machine heads were cleaned in our stations? I think I may have got a batch of bad tapes that may have gunked up one of the heads some where and its getting missed by the cleaning tape. Is is possible that the head has been scratched, and will require replacement. If yes, is there any way to look at the head and detect this?
