Question about HP Compaq Presario CQ70-120US Laptop

1 Answer

I have a Compaq Presario CQ70. Yesterday, I plugged my stereo cord into the microphone jack instead of the speaker jack by accident. It seems to have blown out my built-in microphone because now it will not work for skype calls. Is there a way to fix the built-in mic? And if not, can I plug in an external mic? Thanks!

I have the same Presario CQ70 and I use an external USB Logitech mic/speaker headphone on it. It works without a problem with Skype / Messenger Live, etc

I want to know if my computer has microphone

The full specifications for the CQ70-120US are available here: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c01550112 . This notebook computer comes with a webcam with an integrated microphone. This microphone should be to the right of the webcam. The webcam is nearly centered on the top bezel of the monitor portion of the notebook.

I hope this helps.

Charge battery

Battery dead? Replace battery. Is the laptop working on AC? Try another cord/charger with the EXACT same power specs. Has the AC jack been damaged?

Why do I only hear static

Hi Cathy.. it sounds like you might be connected to the wrong jacks instead of the output that the headphones need.

Most high quality stereo headphones have a single 1/4" stereo plug that would readily plug into a 1/4" jack on the front of the stereo labeled "PHONES" or HEADPHONES".

Many lower quality "computer headphones" or headsets have two 1/8" plugs. One is often black or red and is for an included microphone that may be a boom type (shown below) connected to one of the speakers or an "in-line" type built into the cord itself. The headphone speakers in the headset get their signal from the other plug - which is usually green; but could be any color really. There should be 3 metal parts on the stereo headphone plug. The tip, the middle ring and the bottom ring. Many times the mic is mono (not stereo) and only has only a tip and a bottom ring on the plug. You can see stereo headphone and microphone plugs he picture below:

Computer Headphones or "Headset" with mic and phone plugs.

Your Yamaha stereo will probably NOT have 1/8" jacks to directly plug the headphone into. You can buy an adapter that you would plug your headphones into and then plug the adapter into the 1/4" jack on the stereo. One is pictured below:

Front and rear views of a "1/4" to 1/8" Stereo Adapter Plug" The front plugs into the stereo and the the smaller 1/8" headphones plug into the rear.

I hope this helps & good luck!

My Compaq presario CQ70 shut down after couple of minutes. It stays on only if its plugged in for charging. Please help me solve this problem. Thank you very much.

It seems that your laptop battery is unable to hold a charge for long and that is why it swithches off after a couple of minutes. You will need to get a new battery.

Using audio video jacks on my computer

Make sure you have the correct plug. The audio out is usually a green plug with a little picture of a speaker next to it. The microphone jack is usually red with, you guessed it, a little picture of a microphone next to it. If you're trying to get sound from your PC to your stereo, you want to connect the cable to the green PC jack.

Also, make sure your volume on the PC isn't muted. In the lower right hand corner of your PC screen, you should see a little speaker icon (click the arrow next to the other icons if you don't see it). Double-click that speaker icon and look at the volume settings. Make sure nothing is muted or set too low, then try again.

Hope this helps.

I got new speakers for my compaq presario 5000US series. how do i make them compatible with my system?

You should just have to plug them in. It should be as simple as that, There should be a "miniture stereo" jack from the speakers (usually coloured green). There should be an audio out jack on your compaq. Just plug it in.

If this is a laptop, there MAY be a setting in your control panel to redirect the audio to external speakers. Sheck your compaq owners manual.
