Question about D-Link ADSL2/2+ Modem/Wireless Router 4-Port Switch, 802.11g, QoS (DSL-2640B)
First make sure that you don't have any devices straining the network. Culprits of this could be spyware on one of your user's machines, someone downloading large amounts on your network, and an unsecured network that allows anyone to connect.
A possible way to eliminate the router being the issue would be to disable the wireless access through the router's administrative panel, and then connecting directly to the router with an ethernet cable. Before doing this run a speed test at http://www.speedtest.net/ and then disable the wireless.Try surfing the web to see if there is a noticeable difference, and then run another speed test.

Connect the Router to the modem using Ethernet wire and then connect the laptop with an ethernet cord also and run the set up cd. make sure you get the right cabling.
and if you wnat to go wireless , then after running the set up cd, and was successful to make the wired conenction worked, then you can unplug the laptop now from the router and check if able to detect signal form router. usually you will get the prompt on the lower right hand cormer of the laptop.
then if is able to detect the signal, then log -on to that network.
