How do I get the bolt off the top of the housing assembly in order to replace the mandrel #137646? Besides a wrench what other tool do I need to accomplish this? RIght now the bolt won't loosen because I cannot stop the assembly from spinning.

If your blade will secure on the star, just jam the blade with a block of wood and proceed. If you have ruined your star, remove the three bolts that secure the mandrel housing, allowing the pulley to drop down to the deck (this requires some room beneath the deck, so get the whole thing off the ground first) and secure the pulley with heavy wire to the deck. There are a couple holes in the pulley and those bolt holes in the deck. Twist tight. The nut is threaded normally (counter clockwise to remove). A socket with a long handle does the trick after you use a few drops of break free oil.

Instructions for removing Mandrel from Husqvarna Model YTH24

There should be 3 (or 4 dependent on model) mounting bolts holding the mandrel assembly onto the deck. These are self taping bolts and if the mandrel is a couple years old, these bolts normally break when you remove them. The new assembly should come with new mounting bolts.

How is the mandrel shaft assembly removed from a broken housing and replaced into a new housing? Are there any shop diagrams I can look at?

Use a wood block to hold the blade back while removing the top bolt. then remove the blade. finally knock the shaft out from the top, should free up with a slight hit on the grease fitting and come out through the bottom. Goes back in the same way.

there is a star shaped, or other, pattern on the bottom of the mandrel which fixes it into the blade. this has stripped so the blade is freewheeling on the mandrel. if you cannot remove the blade bolt, I think you are going to have to remove the deck and take it to a fabrication or machine shop to have them remove the blade from the mandrel. then you buy a new mandrel and a new blade, at a small engine repair shop, put it back together. take a picture of the top of the deck before you remove the deck belt so you know how to put it back on after you have the new mandrel bolted in. if it is old you may just want to replace all the mandrels while you are at it. they are less than 50 bucks each.

42 in. deck cuts even on right side, cut uneven on inside left. Mandrel is good and no bent blades, have checked and no problem with uneven deck but it will not level, I have tried repeatedly for 3 or 4...

Well if you are breaking mandrel housings you are hitting more than grass with your mower. They are not intended to be used as brush cutters or mole hill graders. Also, if you have broken a mandrel then you may have slightly bent the top of the mow deck where the mandrel housing bolts up. In order to see it you will need to remove the mandrel housing and use a straight edge to ensure the mounting surface is straight. Quite often you don't need a straight edge; the damage is visible. Typically it will look like a dimple where the bolt head was sitting on the top of the mower deck. With the mandrel off you can use a hammer to pound the surface even. Sears also sells a reinforcement kit to make the mandrel mounting surface more sturdy or you could use fender washers to sturdy up the surface, but the kit is best as it gives support around the entire rim of the deck housing.

The bolt holding the blades is broken off

Your st bet is to replace the entire spindle assembly.

It's not as cheap as drilling out the old bolt and using an "easyout" tool to remove it, but the outcome is certain.

Better yet do a web search on "137645, 137646 Shaft Kit For 130794 Mandrel, AYP" and you can find the shaft only with bearings.

I am replacing the mandrell housing the replacement housing does not have threads in the mounting holes. Are they self tapping or do I need to replace with bolts?

You didn't indicate any model or brand. If the housing goes in from the bottom and the bolts from the top, then it's nice for them to be threaded so you don't have to get under the machine, and nothing more to catch grass on. If the mandrel housing sits on top of the machine, I'd use carriage bolts from the bottom with nuts on top.

How can I un-bolt the Mandrel Pulley from the shaft?

If you have the deck removed from under the tractor you can try putting the blade back on tight if you have removed it and then use the blade to keep the mandrel shaft from turning. It takes quite a bit of torque to break the nut loose on the pulley so a socket and ratchet or breaker bar is the best thing to use. Other than that there is no "special" tool required
