Question about KitchenAid KUDS40CVSS Builtin Dishwasher

1 Answer

I am having a problem with my dishwasher. It is leaving a white deposit on all of my dishes that I cannot get off. At the same time it is not cleaning them. I have tried running an empty cycle with 1 cup of vinegar, which has helped in the past, but this did not work. Any suggestions?

Tip

Hard water Calcium white powder build up in dishwasher

Calcium and magnesium is present in a great number of homes today regardless of hardness or softness of the water. Water containing dissolved carbonates of calcium and magnesium can lower the effectiveness of the detergents you use and leave deposits on the dishware and tub of the dishwasher. When these deposits dry they become what some call lime scale.

To remove these deposits there are a number of cleaners on the market today. I will list them in the order of my preference. You can find them near the dishwasher detergents. If you use them read the instructions on the label, but basically you can run a cycle with no dishes and the cleaner. Some of the cleaners like Lemi-Shine can be used with a full load of dishware after you clean the tub. This helps keep the tub clean and deposits off the dishes. If you want a home remedy that seems to work pretty good, put a cereal size bowl upright in the lower rack (no other dishes in the dishwasher) fill the bowl with vinegar and run a normal cycle. The vinegar will wash out and clean some of the deposits away. If residue is still around run a second cycle of the vinegar wash.

Might be one problem causing both symptoms. Do your "clean" dishes have a cloudy white film on them? If yes, you probably have hard water. The hard water deposits can clog your machine AND leave your dishes looking dirty. Here's is a link to a map showing the regions of hard water:

Leaves a white soapy film on pots, pans and dishes

Are you overloading your dishwasher? Are you loading the dishes in such a way to cover the water shooting up from the blades? Have you run your dishwasher a few times with no dishes in it, adding straight white vinegar to clean it out? How old is your dishwasher?

Dishwasher leaves a white film on didhes and film will not come off.I have drained water heater for about 20 mins to remove calcium deposits but problem still exists.

Start a wash cycle with no dishes and no soap.
Once the machine fills with water and starts washing, open the door and pour in one quart of WHITE vinegar and resume the wash cycle.
Change your dishwasher detergent to the ELECTROLUX brand.
It has added chemicals to combat the problem you describe.
The government mandate to remove phosphates from dishwasher and laundry detergent has resulted in unclean appearance of dishes and laundry.

It is leaving an enormous amount of white residue on our dishes and is causing all of our metal dishes to come out dark.

The white residue could be from one of two sources.

Detergent Residue:
Using too much detergent or poor circulation of water can leave a white residue on the dishes. If the residue is easily rinsed off with warm water then it is detergent. Use less soap, especially if you pre-rinse the dishes or have soft water. Use a hi temperature wash to help dissolve the soap better.

Hard water deposits:
See this link where I put together some information on this.

Whirlpool gold dishwasher is leaving a white milky film on the dishes. My old maytag cleaned fine, so water temp and pressure is not an issue.

Water is the issue.
Replace the water supply valve under the sink and water supply line to dishwasher.
Over time as you can see minerals deposit in the valve and restrict the water flow to the dishwasher.
This is especially inportant on todays water saving units.
Many people replace an old dishwasher and hate the new unit due to a white film left on dishes.

Although you may have paid for a professional installation a new shut off valve is almost never replaced even though the waterline may have been at an additional cost to you..
