Question about KitchenAid KSS042QTX Side by Side Refrigerator

My refrigerator stopped working. It is about 10 yrs old. What could the problem be? If I have to replace it, it is very expensive, can you recommend a solution to get it working? If not, do you know of a supplier that you would recommend?

Hi,

As the weather is getting warmer for many people their freezer and/or refrigerator do not work right because of a dirty condenser coil...there are also many other things that can go wrong. If you are hearing a clicking or buzzing then check out the last two tips.

If your refrigerator is running but warm, then…

Check out this tip that I wrote about that... it is a great place to start trouble shooting your unit...and something that you can do rather then calling a repair person to do a simple thing for you...

My gibson upright freezer stopped working. it is not frost free. it will run for about 10 secs. and stop. it is 22 yrs old and never had a problem before. has it seen its day or can you help me ? thanks...

You will have to check the over load and starter relay on the compressor.they are not expensive to replace.IF you replace it and nothing changes then you will need to replace the compressor. If you have a power meter you can check the continuity on the compressor contacts. If the compressor needs to be replace it could cost up to three hundred dollars for a unit that old.

Interior of Jenn Air side by side frig has odor or burned rubber inside. frig is 10 yrs old and has also had problems with ice build up on coils and I have had to manually defrost when it no longer cools....

would like to say yes but parts for this unit are scarce and expensive,10 years is pretty good and if you do decide to change it you will notice a big difference in running costs/efficiency.

What is the clunking noise made after the refrigerator stops running? Its a Kenmore and is 10 yrs old. We have thoroughly cleaned behind and beneath the refrigerator and now the noise seems louder.

The clunking noise you hear , is probably when the compressor shuts off , due to temp reached or when it goes into defrost . An internal motor mount spring , inside the compressor , is broken ( rusted and broke ) . The refrig can go on working for years , without any problem , except noisey , when it cuts off . To stop the noise , replaceing the compressor is the only option . I have heard of placeing objects under 1 leg of the compressor , to " re-adjust " the ballance , but thru my experience , another spring broke , causing more knocking .

Stopped cooling

Hello cpuklutz
Welcome

You said, Kenmore; 21 cu ft; 10-years old; just stopped cooling; wondering if it even makes any financial sense to get estimate to repair, or is 10 years about it's trouble free length of service

Here is an article that you may find useful and interesting related to your situation.
Repair or replace?

When to pull the plug on your old refrigerator

It nearly always makes sense to undertake simple do-it-yourself repairs,
such as replacing a gasket on a refrigerator or a freezer.

Typically, you'll also find a troubleshooting section for more-serious problems
in the owner's manual.

Should you pay for a repair or buy a new model?
The answer depends mostly on the age of your refrigerator,
how much you bought it for,and the cost of the repair.

Follow these guidelines:

When a repair makes sense.

If your refrigerator is under warranty or less than four years old (three years for top-freezers),
paying for a repair makes sense.
Note that refrigerators under warranty might require service from a factory-authorized technician;
readers have found them on a par with independent repairers.

When a repair might be a wise choice.

If your refrigerator is out of warranty and is four to seven years old,
it might make sense to pay for a repair. Customers generally pay $100 to $200 for a repair.
But you might want to buy a new model even at this stage,
given that today's models are quieter and have added features.
Higher energy efficiency is another plus: Energy Star-qualified models made after April 28, 2008,
are 43 percent more efficient than conventional models built before 2001 and 56 percent
more efficient than those built before 1993.

When it pays to replace.

The repair costs more than half the price of a comparable new refrigerator.
Data also shows that it doesn't pay to fix a less-expensive top-freezer refrigerator
six or more years old or a bottom-freezer or side-by-side eight or more years old.

Thanks to better recycling programs, less than 10 percent
of a refrigerator you replace is likely to end up in a landfill.

Thank You, HUUUM
