Getting a new lamp

Is replacing a cold fusion lamp an easy thing to do? The underlying question is: is this laptop fixable? I'll try pressing the F keys before set up, I only did it afterward before. Someone else mentioned that the "screen card" might be the problem--what does that mean?

NO replacing the Cold Fusion lamp is NOT EASY if your are not experienced with these do not try it . YES your laptop is very much FIXABLE . When you see the POST PROCESS on your screen then you press Fn key at the bottom left hand corner keep it depressed and then press the function key with the computer icon 2 times - first time switches display to external monitor only , second time to both LCD and External monitor. Actually for LCD screen to glow a small thin fluroscent lamp is used which requires a high voltage of about 150-200volts that is generated by this so called screen card - the correct name Invertor PCB or board.

My laptop screen is blank when i push the on button, the screen is blank but the lamp for the screen is on,what is my laptop problem?tq

To solving the problem of Dark Screen of Laptop there are a few things to determine to see what the problem is.
The first thing I would advise to be done is to check your laptop with an external monitor to make sure that it is not the video chip that went bad. So connect your laptop to an external monitor and see if you get a picture (you might have to press the fn and one of the f1 , f2 , f3 etc....keys together to switch the output to an external display , If you get a picture on the external monitor you know it is not the motherboard , (whew, was getting scared already). If you don't get a picture on the external monitor make sure it is plugged in correctly and that you pressed the correct keys to have the output signal go to the external monitor. If you are sure you did all of the above steps correctly , then shut off the computer and try pressing down on the keyboard while powering up the laptop and see if you get an image. Sometimes if a computer has a loose connection between the GPU (Graphic Processing Unit) and the motherboard it will result in no video or flaky video , so try pressing down on the keyboard while powering on and try see if you get video. If you get a video output then you will know that it is a flaky video chip and that will have to be fixed.
Inverter is usually at the bottom of the screen. Now back to if you got a picture on an external display. Once you got a picture on the external monitor and established that it is not the video chip or motherboard you will have to try to determine if it is the lcd screen itself or if it is the inverter. The inverter is a small electronic board that controls the voltage that is sent to the backlight (the light bulb of the laptop screen) of the lcd screen. If the inverter breaks or dies then no voltage gets to the backlight resulting in no video output signal to the display. In my experience, I see that most of the times it is the inverter that is the problem and that is a pretty easy fix , you just have to get the correct inverter that supplies the right amount of voltage and you will be back in business. But in some instances it is the backlight (light bulb) that went , and to repair this is more difficult and more time consuming. One way to see if it is the inverter , is to test the two prongs of the inverter with a voltage meter and see if they are giving off the correct voltage (please read up more on this method , as inverters have high voltage output , so you have to know what you are doing , so I strongly advise to read up on this more prior to doing it. Another simpler way is to shine a flashlight on the lcd , if you see a faint image then in most cases it is the backlight that needs to be replaced. If you don't see an image even when shining the flashlight then it is most likely the inverter and it should be an easy fix.

On a last note if you determined that it is the backlight that is faulty , although it is fixable it requires more time and experience then just replacing the inverter , and if one is not experienced you can damage the lcd screen itself as well , so generally if the backlight is faulty either have a laptop repair shop replace the backlight , but only one who has experience. Or another option is to buy a new lcd panel and install it either yourself or proffesionally. Generally it is not very difficult to replace a lcd panel but there are some models that are more difficult so try to ask a laptop repair shop about your specific model

Hope this helps if so do rate the solution

Hello! I have an old Thinkpad T23 and lately the screen has been staying blank when I try to turn it on from sleep mode. I can hear the fan starting when I press the start button as well as it sounding...

The fault is a back-light problem and is caused by either a faulty inverter at the base of the LCD screen or a faulty CCFL lamp. Please click on this link and follow my instructions for a fix :-

An alternate solution, if you have a spare monitor and it won't cost you a thing - you can connect an external monitor to the video port on the laptop, power up the monitor first and then boot up the laptop. the video data will automatically switch to the external monitor.

Laptop wont take a charge

There are two ways ,first you will have to replace the whole motherboard which is not cheap ,the second way would be to buy the power jack seperate from a place like Ebay and then try to solder it onto the motherboard which is not an easy thing to do as you need a special soldering gun.
The best option is to take it to an authorised Acer support center and ask for a quote.

Good Luck

Black screen

Easy Fix! There seems to be a connection problem. If it still powers on, the problem is cable that sends the sigal to the screen. All you have to do is open up the laptop and replace the wire. Simple!

My laptop

Yes that can be fixed and it is quite easy. You can just take it to any electronics shop some places might have to send it away but some will fix it right in store. They just need to solder a new connection in for you and takes about 10-15 mins.

Plugging into a different screen doesn't work

The Cold fusion lamp in your LCD and or the invertor board for the LCD could be bad that is the reason why a faint image . As for the external monitor you should enable it by the Fn+F5/F6/F7 key by pressing it twice at boot up before windows is fully loaded - this to ensure that the external monitor works with your laptop . If the resolution setting and frequency is not comaptible with external monitor you connect then you wont have display on your external monitor . Start windows in safe mode .
