A little more info pleas. The single most common cause of this particular problem is the monitor being plugged in to an inactive VGA socket. Most manufacturers build several models of computer based on the same base components, you will often find that your computer has both a reasonably powerful graphics card plugged in to a socket on the motherboard and a less powerful, basic graphics chip built in to the motherboard that is disabled. The reason for this is that the base model of your computer is only supplied with the basic graphics chip but if you paid for a more powerful model a more powerful graphics card was supplied that disables the basic chip. have a look at the back of your computer (the box you described as the CPU) and see if you have 2 blue sockets with 3 rows of pinholes in them, if you do your monitor needs to be plugged in to the one that is higher up and sitting horizontally. If not message back.

Just to check, do you have any power settings enabled? If you right click the desktop and go to properties, then screensaver, then power settings, look for hibernation and options to turn off the monitor after a certain amount of time. Maybe one of these settings got checked.
