There are many variations on problems with HP printer install. A crude method which worked for me on 2 occasions was simply to pull printer power cord out and reinsert after 30 secs. The installation may then complete. This is suggested by HP but you may not have tried it.
I have had many of problems with HP printer installs on different PCs and OS versions. In some cases if you just install the drivers only and ignore the bloated software that comes with them you can get a working setup. Use other applications for scanning etc..
I have had HP printers working fine only for XPSP3 to come along and render them useless.
Following HPs instructions for level 188.8.131.52 uninstall and reinstall may work also. Firewall and antivirus off is strogly advised.

Disable all the startup items and your security software and firewall. Then try installing the printer. If you still have the same problem try installing the printer by connecting to a different USB port. You can also uninstall all the USB port from device manager. restart the computer and then install the printer.

There might be some issues either with the printer cable or the USB port on your system... Just try another cable if you have one... or u can also try another usb port on the system...
