SOURCE: Noisey Cub Cadet mower
If the noise is coming from the deck, locate the idle pulley on the deck. there should be 1 or 2 rubber "bumpers" at the opposite end of the pulley arm where it meets the "j" pin. If they are missing, it will make a loud metal to metal sound.

just rewind the spring starting with the outer end and fill it back into unit. I always have the rope extended and rewind it back in and reinstall

A medium length extension (stuck through the grill), a swivel and an impact is all you need to remove the pulley with the frozen bearing. It's just a bolt, a washer, and a lock washer holding it on. You just need to remove the pulley to see if the bearing is stuck. Take the pulley to your local shop that can press bearings and you can be up and running for $20 dollars instead of $300.
