A dirty hard first clean all of the dust from your computer using a fine air blower from an air compressor making sure there is no moisture in the air line then give the hard drive a firm tap on one side to free up the read arm
First test your PSU then test all leads that are attached to your hard drive sounds like a faulty lead of some sorts then
try replacing all the leads that attach to your hard drive including electrical extensions + IDE,SATA and the ones that attach from your motherboard to hard drive
make sure all leads that are attached to your drives dvd\cd 3 1/2 inch floppy have secure connections and are not faulty or just replace them they are probably old and faulty ?
good luck

hope this helps

This is an EXTERNAL hard drive, no IDE, SATA, etc. It's USB. Bronk50, how can you give a solution when you don't even have the parameters of the problem? Ask for more information if you don't know enough to solve.

if this external hard drive makes a clicking noise at start up and is not recognised you have a dirty hard drive the reader arm is skipping across the platters of your hard drive to free up this arm give the hard drive a firm tap on the side to free it up .I am only trying to help people with small computer problems and have made word templates to apply to problems some dont give enough imformation regarding there issue im terribly sorry if you thought i was a guru

An external hard drive is nothing but a SATA drive in an enclosure. Same rules apply regardless of internal or external. Don't give the guy **** for giving you a legit answer just because you didn't supply details.

The dvd player wont open and it isn't reading dvd's.

You will want to check in Device Manager to see if the device is even detected by the computer. Right Click My Computer, Properties, Click Hardware Tab and Device Manager. If it isn't recognizing the DVD drive then it is most likely bad.

My I/O Magic Gigabank 500 was tipped over by my daughter. It now beeps intermittently and is not recognized by my computer.

it is possible you have a bad drive now as they cant be moved while on. However, turn it off let it cool down. Turn off the computer it was on. now disconnect it from both Data and wall for hard drive. give it say 20-30 minutes. put it back in the correct position, and try turning it on. after it has come up to speed plug it back into the computer. if you hear a sound try to compare it to one of these. you will notice that they have a play button next to the sounds.

Also IO magic isn't the hard drive manufacture IO uses other brands of hard drives to put inside their units. http://datacent.com/hard_drive_sounds.php these guys have a great sound of some failed drives.

if the drive can reset itself then all will be back to normal. if not you will need to do a drive test call them to find out what they recommend.

I have a verbatim external hard drive, model usb500 and my computer does not recognize it. I have it plugged into a working usb port and the blue light on the drive is on, but my computer isn't...

You need to assign a drive letter for it to show up in Windows.
Right click on My Computer, click Properties. Then go to disc management, and right click on your external hard drive, and click Assign Drive Letter, and choose a letter and it will show up in My Computer.
Good luck!

Computer does not recognize Seagate is attached...need to open the Seagate case and check wiring.

Before you open it (and void your warranty), check to see if it works on another computer. If not the HD is most likely dead, and if you still want to open it up you will probably need a security bit set.

If updating the drive firmware does not work, then replacement of the drive will be necessary.
