Question about Dryers

1 Answer

Only works for a few minutes: set timer, push start ingiter glows, valve clicks fire cycle repeats 2-3 times then fails to re-ignite the vent hose is disconnected at this time the vent has been cleaned to near new condition Could it be that the valve coils fail after things warm up? Could it be a termostat that fails after things warm up?

Sounds like burner not igniting. On front of dryer in the lower right there should be a gas valve/burner access panel. Usually you just have to pry out at bottom of panel & swing out and up to remove. This gives you access to valve coils and igniter. With panel removed set timer for heated dry and start dryer, observing first the igniter which should glow bright orange-red, then after a couple seconds you should hear a "Click" which is gas valve opening and a blue flame ignites for heat. If no glow is seen after a few seconds or at least a minute, igniter is bad, if it does glow and no click is heard from the gas valve, the coils (electro magnets) on the valve are bad, or the "Flame present" sensor is bad. Chances are it's either the coils or igniter.Try this on all heat settings, if you get heat at only one setting it might be in timer contacts, but not common. Again you can repair/replace both the igniter (usually just plugs into a receptical) and the coils (2 donut looking objects on the gas valve, replace both.) Access door may be on back if not on front, but normally their on lower right of front.

Maytag Gas Dryer, 18 years old. Vents are clean through the entire system. The thermal igniter/coupler glows for a few seconds and sometimes ignites the gas and it's fine. However, sometimes it glows and...

Hello- You will need to have the Coils replaced, they are not holding the valve open consistently, it is a fairly common issue and presents itself as you describe. The parts are fairly inexpensive but you should have a Tech out to change them for you. These are great dryers and I would have the Tech look through it while it's opened up...drum wheels and belt should be checked for ware. Hope this helps, best regards.

Your gas valve coils are defective. Part #694539 and 694540 are required. Once the coils get hot they collapse internally and the gas valve shuts off. This is a common problem when valve coils get weak from use.

Watch the igniter. Does it glow bright orange, then shut off without igniting the gas? (When the gas ignites there's a large blue flame.) If so, there may be defective coils on the gas valve. Mounted on the top of modern gas valves, there are black electrical coils. The coils, when energized, open the gas valve. If one or more of the coils are defective, the valve doesn't open and the gas cannot ignite. Because it's often difficult to properly test the coils, it's usually best to replace both (all) of them at the same time.

After a few heating cycles the burner does not ignite

The problem you are describing is usually associated with a bad gas valve coil. The dryer runs normally until it gets hot, then starts making a strange clicking noise. After it cools down, the dryer runs normally again. The gas valve coils (there are two of them) usually run about $20 a piece. I recommend replacing both of them at the same time just to be sure. I hope this helps.
