Question about Kenmore 60721 Refrigerator

1 Answer

Our Kenmore Pro gets stuck in the defrost cycle. When in defrost the freezer temp reads 43 and the cooler 50. The last time it was stuck I unplugged it and it seemed to reset it. How long should the defrost cycle last?

I have. Kenmore comerical referigerator 253.44723100. The coils freeze. Keeps a pretty consistant temp of 43. If I defrost will work for a few days then temp climbs back up.

Hello;

My name is Peter. I am a retired field service refrigeration technician.

You should not have to defrost manually. You have a automatic defrost cycle. Every 8-10 hours your unit should shut down for 20-30 minutes, except for the light. This is when your defrost heater turns on. Afterwards, the freezer turns back on.

The defrost heater is on the bottom of your cooling coil behind the back lower wall.

Part #: 216730700 Cost: $43.00

You also have Refrigerator Bi-metal Defrost Thermostat. Cost $27.00. At times the back of this component will pop out and fail.
25592992-wte2ibsdwpcevewvzivs5fqb-2-2.jpg You also have a defrost mechanical timer. This is located in the lower back behind a metal plate with a slotted hole through it. You can trip the freezer into the defrost mode. Taking a large screw driver turn the stem slowly clockwise one click at a time until the unit shuts down. After 30 minutes repeat this process to turn the unit back on, until you get a new timer.

Notice the slotted hole on the left.

You may also defrost by unplugging the freezer for 24 hours. Have plenty of old towels handy. Plug the unit back in and after 12 hours you will be back to your desired temperature.

When the defrost comes on it is on to long the temp gets above freezing I need to make the defrost cycle shorter

Does it? Or is it just the display that reads 50? Don't forget the evaporator has to get to 50f to get rid of the ice forming on it. It will do this 3 or 4 times a day, but the product temperature should not creep much above setpoint. Check the food temperature with a digital probe when defrost occurs to see if it is only the display module ( which may have it's sensing phial too close to the evaporator or have lost it's insulation jacket)
Also check the grill in the base (condenser) is clear and clean so it recovers from defrost as it should..

Model TFX30PP purchased 9-10 years ago. The refrigerator & freezer are not cold enough. There was frost built up in the back of the freezer. We defrosted it. Plugged it back in - fridge read in the...

What you have is either a bad heater or heater bi-metal thermostat most likely. I say that since the ice box is working correctly until that frost builds up. Have you checked them. Your heater should test good for continuity(not open or bad) but the bi-metal is a different story. It is open at 50 degrees f and it only closes or carrys voltage when it is sitting in a freezer at 25f. What it does is allow power to the heater when the timer or automatic control calls for defrost. The defrost cycle is around 20 to 40 minutes and power is constantly being sent to that heater the whole time. When it gets warm enough for frost to melt 50F then that bi-metal opens up and kills the power to that heater. If that heater was to stay on it would not be purty. For the rest of the defrost cycle the coils simply rest and drip.

All refrigeration products have a defrost set point. Most residential units defrost about every six to eighteen hours. This process should take about 30 minutes to 1 hour. The temp goes up so high inside because there is a heating element in the coils to thaw any residual ice. The temp should not exceed about 45 degrees though. If it does the the compressor is signaled to come back on and start cooling again. This is perfectly alright. The time at higher temp is not enough to spoil the food. Hope this helps. Good luck.

Kenmore top freezer, not cooling what so ever...HELP!!!

Sears has a number that is different than everyone. The number looks like this 213.52698 for example. The defrost thermostat will open the contact at about 50 degrees. If the thermostat is open all the time the defrost will never happen. Let me know, Sea Breeze
