Check the fomat of the song you are trying to play.
Check what are all the formats it can play.
And try playing them using the player compatible file formats.

You have probably formatted to FAT 32 which is incompatable. Try this.
Hold the menu button(has the file folder picture) until "search" is displayed on the display. Push th down arrow on the centre pod, 10 times, until "advanced search" is displayed. Push the right arrow key on the centre pod until "Format" is displayed. Select "Format OK" and press the play button. The unit is returned to factory format and should be fine. Good luck.

SOURCE: format error
It's an unsupported file format. Are you trying to play files that were ripped in I-tunes? I-tunes does not make mp3s, it makes m4a files, which are not supported. Make sure the files you put on this player are mp3 files. You can also use wma files, but you will probably need to use Windows Media Player to transfer those files.
Let me know how you get on & shout if you need more help!

SOURCE: format error .it will not play .
Songs may not be encoded in mp3 format even if the extension is mp3. You can try converting the files to mp3 again by using a free program like Medimonkey or any online converter, and then see if they play. I had the same problem with all the .mp4 video files.
