Hi.

The C drive is the hardware device where the Windows XP system (which is software) is installed. If you get the Windows XP startup shown on screen, and not only the initial splash screen and RAM and drives POST test, then the disk is still good, what is corrupted is the Windows XP system software.

In that case you need to reinstall Windows XP, using a recovery CD or a generic Windows install disk corresponding to the version on licence sticker at the base of the Thinkpad.

Let me know if you need further clarifications. Please do not Pass To Other Experts if there is no need to. That would be a waste of time for both of us.

Regards.

Ginko.

Hi,

Seems like you have been infected with a fun list of trojans and malware. I just fixed 3 machines last week. To access you drives, explore the recycle bin and then in the address bar type C:\ and hit enter, that will allow you to view your files. Search for SDFix using any of your favorite search engines. Exctract it to C:\SDFix. READ all the information and help files. Boot into SAFE MODE, if you can't you can run the SDfix from regular mode and I think it gives you the option to re-enable booting into SAFE MODE. Follow all directions, let it run, it may seem like it is frozen for a few minutes, but it is doing much stuff. After that is done, search for KillBox, Rogue Remover, SuperAntiSpyware FREE, run those and that should solve your problems... in any case, I would BACKUP ALL FILES that are IMPORTANT to you BEFORE attempting to fix this nasty mess you have. Please post your feedback and Vote if the problem resolved as per your satisfaction.

As you have said that C drive is got formated so i would say, there is no way to retrive the data.

Hi,

the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.
goodluck!

Message on screen: Windows failed to start. A recent hardware... It then cuts to startup repair and attempting repairs. Have gone through this a dozen times only to end up where I started. What do I...

I assume you've already tried pressing F8 on startup to get into the start-up options screen (from there you can attempt "Restore System to a previous date.").
If you can't get anywhere with the F8 options, try starting up your system from a Windows Install disk. (Unfortunately, few computers come with this. Some have a Restore mode using either a special startup hot key or a set of optical disks, but this usually involves formatting C: and wiping out everything before setting it back to factory original state.) Once you have the Windows Install disk going, watch for the Automatic System Repair option to come up. This is different for each version of Windows, so I can't give you more than that other than to follow the on-screen instructions.
Note: virus infections can disrupt the hardware registry and produce the symptoms you have. By now, your backup registry is corrupted (that is why the automatic repair fails). I've found the easiest virus fix for a desktop computer is to remove the hard drive and install it as a second drive in a known-good computer, then have that system scan the problem drive for virus infections and file system corruption. If you have a 2.5" - 3.5" drive adapter and can remove the drive easily, you can also use this tactic on laptop hard drives. You will probably still need to repair the operating system damage.

Hp mini 311 stuck in start up mode says "windows xp" over and over and then it goes to black and then starts up again with xp. I have turned off, taken battery out, tried to go into safe mode,...

boot it with the windows XP CD and reinstall windows. hit the 'r' key the second time it appears on the screen when it says that it has found an existing OS in 'c' drive, this will reinstall the OS without loosing any previous data.

Hi

You could try hitting the F5 Or F8 key on start up this should give you several options
also in safe mode it you start with safe mode with networking
you should be able to sign in as administrator then change password on your account

if this does not solve the problem please come back to us stating what operating system you are running is it xp or vista or windows 7

many thanks for using fixya

This morning I tried turning my laptop on and it started fine, it went to the Dell Logo screen, but then it continued on and went to a black page with an error on it. Everything the previous day had gone...

Start and let it boot again and press F8 immediatly and use SAFE MODE to boot,
let the Desktop come up,
once stable shut down and wait for 3 - 4 mins
restart

Was upgrading from Windows 98 to Windows XP AND ?

If its an old laptop with 300MHz Processor or so, better try to install Win98 itself.
