Just got a used Zenith off craigslist. Although the front panel is
damaged (must use remote to turn off and on), the image looks fine ...
EXCEPT ... any text from DirecTV (info screens, TV guide, etc.) is
awfully blurry. Is there some way to get that into focus? Is it a
DirecTV problem or a TV problem? Like I said, the image looks fine.
Text from a TV screen looks OK.

The dark rectangle appears because you have the closed captions on and set to TEXT. Closed captions set to CC1 puts the words on the screen and TEXT puts a black box on the screen. Go into the menu, navigate to the page with closed captions and set your captions to OFF.
To enable close cationing on your TV follow this:-
Press "Menu" button on the remote control to appear "Setup" menu on the screen.
Use "Up and Down" arrows on the remote contol to select "Captions/Text" on your screen.
 Press "Right or Left " arrows to select any one of the following options. Caption-1, Caption-2, Caption-3, Caption-4 Text-1, Text-2, Text-3, Text-4.
Press enter to return TV viewing.
To turn the caption feature to "On" or "Off'
Press menu key on the remote control to display "Setup" menu.
Using "UP/DOWN" buttons to select captions on your screen.
Press "Right or Left" arrow to switch the captions feature 'ON" or "OFF" or "EZ Mute"
 Press enter to continue.
Yes it is definitely time for a new tv. If you live near a populated area just go on your local craigslist and you can get great used televisions for quite cheap. I have seen nice 36" tv's sell for 50$ and less. Thank you and good luck, Lee
You will need a Zenith remote with a menu button
There should be a "hidden" menu. Before you access it, I want to warn you, do NOT change any values of anything you don't understand what it is or does. You can PERMANENTLY DAMAGE YOUR TV. Also, write down the original values of anything you change before changing it!!!!! If you still want to proceed(at your own risk), here ya go. 1. Press and hold the menu button until the menu comes up on screen and then times out (5 - 10 seconds) 2. Immediately press 9, 8, 7, 6, Enter. 3. The set should now be in the service menu mode. To access most of the features selection 00 needs to be toggled from 0 to 1 4. After your adjustments 00 needs to be toggled from 1 to 0 5.Feature 16 unlocks the auto-program (change to 0)
this answer has given also to some one had the same problem.
"On your remote should be a button called TV caption or text. Turn off the closed caption as someone hit it and turned it on by accident. If its not on your remote, then it is in the menu." Good Luck
