Plug black lead into bottom socket. Red lead goes into middle socket.
Select the Ohms range on the dial... the lower left section ... Denoted by a Greek letter Omega (Upside down horseshoe)
set the range on the dial (This meter goes from 200 to 2000K ohms)
and read away....

If the battery is good
You have a parisitic draw somewhere:

Switch your Digital Multimeter to DC AMPs. Amps is usually indicated by an "A" on the Multimeter Switch. AC is usually shown as a "~" symbol and DC shown as a "-" symbol. You usually have to move the Multimeter positive lead to a separate socket on the Multimeter. Sometimes there are 2 sockets, a high range and a low range. Always test on the highest setting first. For example: high setting on your multimeter may be 10 Amp. Test on the 10 Amp setting first, then if the current drawn is less than your Multimeter Low setting, move to that setting and keep testing. In my example my Multimeter low setting is 0.3 Amps. Also indicated as 300mA (mA x 1000 = A).

WARNING! Once the multimeter is on Amps do not connect it directly across the battery and do not hit the starter button while testing for current Amps. This will cause the internal fuse in the multimeter to blow! A multimeter set on current is a very low resistance, almost a short circuit and will draw as much current as your battery will supply till something melts. Always plug the Multimeter leads back to volts when you have finished testing to avoid blowing the fuse next time you use your multimeter.

Voltage ReadingTo test for battery drain: Switch everything off on the car. Disconnect just one battery lead. For example disconnect the Positive Battery Lead. Set your Multimeter to Amps as described above. Connect the Positive Multimeter Lead to the Battery Positive terminal. Make sure the Positive Lead you removed from the battery does not touch anything grounded, like the car frame etc…. Connect the Negative Lead from the Multimeter to the Positive Lead you removed from the Battery. You should now see current drain measured in Amps. Move to the lower Amp setting on your multimeter if the current is lower than the setting on the Multimeter Low setting. Start to unplug the wires or fuses around your car and see if the current reading goes to zero. This will point you in the direction of the current thief. You can convert to Power measured in Watts by multiplying it by the Battery Voltage. Power = Volts x Amps 4.2Watts or (12Volts x 0.35Amps).

Tem my briggs portable generator has no spark it appears ignition coil has failed. Items checked. disconnected kill wire to coil, disconnected oil sensor wire no spark this will be the 2nd coil


Test the coil electrically

How do i Measure the resistance of each thermistor


Dryer getting over heated. Check your exhaust vent for good air flow. Also your operating thermostat could be defective overheating the dryer and blowing your thermal fuse. To check resistance set your multimeter to ohms and connect your leads to thermistor make sure to disconnect the wires from the thermistor.

Hi dazsculpt,
I would start by checking the fuse for the right turning light. I think it is common for left and right. Check if the left turning light is working. If it is, you can use this as a reference.
Using a multimeter on your Yamaha is the same as using it elsewhere. The only difference is the setting you would use.
Two types of multimeters available are analog and digital. If you do not have a multimeter, I would suggest you purchase a digital.
A digital multimeter gives readings in numbers and is cheaper, whereas an analogue multimeter has a needle, and you have to read the correct scale.
Your multimeter will have instructions. There is a knob on the meter you turn to select the scale - voltage, ohms, amps, and maybe some extras.
The multimeter will probably have several ohm readings to select. You can select the lowest range for a start. Higher ranges measure very low resistance, and can even measure the resistance through your body!
Make sure that there is no power when you use the resistance measurement. Disconnect the battery on the Yamaha. It does not matter which way the leads are to measure resistance, it does for D.C. voltage, like your bike.
Remove both bulbs from the bike - left and right sides. There are two things to measure. The center of the bulb holder, and the housing of the bulb holder. Connect one leads to the center of the bulb holder should, and the other end on the flasher unit wire for that bulb. It should show a zero reading. Take another reading with the first lead still on the center of the bulb holder, and connect the other lead to the housing of the bulb holder. It should not show a reading, as this should be open circuit. If you have a reading, you will probably have a short circuit. Compare left with the right side, and there should be a difference.
Hope this has helped sort out the bike and use a multimeter.

Battery wont stay charged while running put in new battery problem still not staying charged.


Step 1. First things first, load test the battery. Most places like Auto Zone will do it for free. Even if it measures over 12.5 vdc it can still be bad under a load. Battery is typically rated at 19 amp hours and 270 Cold Cranking Amps (CCA).

Start the engine and measure DC Volts across the battery terminals, the regulator should be putting out 14.3 - 14.7 vdc at 3600 rpm and 75 degrees F.


Step 2. To check the regulator unplug it from the stator. Take a test light and clip it to the negative terminal of the battery and then touch first one pin and then the other on the plug that goes to the regulator. If you get even the slightest amount of light from the test light the regulator is toast.

To do this with a meter which is more accurate: black lead to battery ground, red lead to each pin on the plug, start with the voltage scale higher than 12vdc and move voltage scale down in steps for each pin. Any voltage is a bad regulator.


Step 3. On the other part of the disconnected regulator plug. Set the multimeter for Ohms x1 scale and measure for resistance across the pins of the stator. You should read something around 0.1 to 0.2 ohms for the TC88 32 amp system.


Step 4. Then check for continuity between each pin on the plug and frame/engine ground. The meter needle should not move (infinite resistance)(digitals will show infinite resistance) if the meter needle does move (indicating continuity)(digitals will show some resistance), recheck very carefully. If the meter still shows continuity to ground the stator is shorted (bad).


Step 5. Set the meter to read A/C volts higher than 30 volts (the scale setting for voltage should always be higher than the highest voltage you expect or you may fry the meter). Start the bike, and measure from one pin to the other on the plug (DO NOT cross the multimeter probes! - touch them to each other). You should read roughly 16-20 vac per 1,000 rpm.


Step 6. If the battery was good under load test, if the stator is NOT shorted to ground, and the stator is putting out A/C voltage, then the regulator is bad (most likely even if if passed step 2).

How do I test an 8-0hm speaker or horn with a digital multimeter? Help!


What? You can take a friggin multimeter, stick it across the terminals and if it does nott give you any resistance back you fryed the voice coil. If you get 0 ohms it means you fired the voice coil. If you get 4, 8, 16 ohms then your good to go.
