You posted this question for three different Kindle units. Since two of them were for the Fire, I'm assuming that's what you have. If you have something different, please specify.

For the Kindle Fire, press and hold the power button for fifteen seconds or so, ignoring the "Shut down?" prompt, until it turns off. Release the button then press and hold it for a second or two until it starts to reboot.

You didn't specify the model of your Kindle, but the user guide for my Kindle states that it must be turned off to charge.
